Gabbers, dance or die

The term gabber refers to a hardcore techno subculture that emerged in the early 1990s in the Netherlands, particularly in Rotterdam. The word derives from a Dutch slang term meaning “friend” or “mate,” reflecting the originally local and communal nature of the scene. Gabber developed as a reaction against the more commercial and melodic forms of electronic dance music, favoring instead an aggressive, fast-paced sound characterized by distorted kick drums, tempos often exceeding 160 BPM, and minimal melodic structure.
Historically, gabber is closely linked to the social and economic context of post-industrial Dutch cities. The music expressed frustration, energy, and identity among working-class youth, translating urban tension into sonic intensity. Early record labels such as Rotterdam Records and artists like DJ Paul Elstak and Neophyte played a crucial role in defining the genre’s aesthetic and disseminating it internationally.
The gabber movement also developed a distinct visual and bodily culture. Shaved heads, bomber jackets, tracksuits, and Nike Air Max sneakers became recognizable symbols, while the highly physical “hakke” dance embodied the music’s relentless rhythm. Despite frequent moral panic and associations with violence or extremism, gabber represents an important chapter in the history of electronic music, demonstrating how subcultures use sound, style, and community to construct collective identity and resistance within late twentieth-century urban Europe.

Interior design project and editorial book
This project aims at the redevelopment of an extremely attractive but abandoned location and the promotion of club culture. The building is developed by following the geometries of the existing pre-existing by creating spaces that can be effective for the management of the complex dynamics of nightclubs; special attention has also been paid to the private area, obtaining spaces that can be used outside the weekend events for cultural promotion. The project is presented in the form of an editorial book, consisting of an initial research part on sound vibrations, dancing, the history of discos and club culture. Preceding the presentation of the project itself is a photographic selection that visually introduces the suggestions within electronic music clubs and events. The entire project, ranging from research to the interior and the presentation itself, takes on the deeper narrative of the dynamics of this world that is always considered superficially.

Straight Edge, the rebellion of the rebellion
Poster 50x70cm
Straight edge is a cultural movement that emerged in the early 1980s within the American hardcore punk scene. It is characterized by the rejection of alcohol, drugs, and, in some cases, promiscuous sexual behavior, positioning itself as an ethical and political response to the self-destruction perceived in traditional punk culture. The term “straight edge” originates from a song by Minor Threat (1981) and denotes a conscious choice of self-control and discipline. Over time, the movement has taken on different forms, intersecting with social, political, and identity-based concerns, while retaining a strong imprint of cultural opposition.
