'PERPETUAL' Tim Gresham's
@greshtim solo exhibition at Ararat Tama Regional Art Gallery
@araratgallerytama is an exhibition of tapestries that has very much been hovering around me particularly as I'm entering a new phase in my own work of textile abstract minimalism.
As I live close to Ararat Gallery and know Lake Wendouree, the initial source of inspiration for many of Tim's tapestries, being Ballarat born, I have a history there.
Tim and I both were employed as 'fresh' weavers at the Australian Tapestry Workshop
@austapestry in the late 1980's under Sue Walker's
@suew45 dedicated and devoted directorship with Sara Lindsay's
@slindsay.daytoday mentoring watchful caring eyes.
I've been aware of Tim's progression as a tapestry artist over the decades since. The techniques of hatching and half passing that Tim has masterfully honed to create his own unique style, his language, and a voice in modernist minimalist abstraction have been a long time developing.
In comparing 2 of the tapestries 'Shift' the dominantly pink, grey background one and 'Phase II' orange with purple that sit on opposing walls almost opposite one another, one is swept up in the bright colours, ripples reminiscent of water, rhythmical shapes moving in different directions.
I'm transported directly to Tim's breathingtaking sunrise photos of the sky and its reflections on the waters of Lake Wendouree, Ballarat. Photos that Tim has exhibited separately. Brilliant startling atmospheric light and vivid colours captured by his eyes and camera lens that only occur at dawn (and dusk ). Photos that have directly influenced these tapestries.
If you live in Victoria or are an Australian tapestry weaver, please spend quality time with Tim Gresham's tapestries, a chance in a decade to view such a committed body of weaving.
Tim's show closes on the 15th of February 2026, and there is still time to do so.
'SHIFT' and 'PHASE II' the details within this post are bold, cheerful, and one feels overcome with joy standing before them.
