over 50 years ago I won the under 9’s North Bondi nippers overall point score. since then I’ve been out of surf clubs totally supportive of what Australian Lifesavers do despite little altercations at Bondi back in the 70s when there was much more friction between the two groups. Surfers were not clubbies as we called them back then. These days there is a much bigger overlap between the two activities. So anyway, I got an order for a board from both Askew brothers Liam and Finn, and had no idea whether either of them could surf well or not. And being polite guys neither of them were going to talk themselves up. And surprise surprise yesterday I received some footage of Finn on his new taj model and oh my god the guy is not only ripped but he effing rips.

The Banana is back! This time with a double concave. First proven by Shane Herring at Avalon over 30 years ago yet his surfing that day rates as some of the fastest, hardest surfing ever done. Pretty much panned as a design by other shapers, even though scores if not hundreds of shapers tried the design out it. It was seen as overly specialised. Why on earth would you want a board perfectly designed to go in clean hollow 4 to 6 foot waves? Anyway God bless Kelly for putting it into production with Firewire and that then was the second time it was rejected and here it is now, in 2026, but this time with a double concave for added grip, and very good surfers are rating them and rating them as the best tube riding boards they’ve ever had. But of course the turns you can do will be tighter than any other board. so that’s a bonus. It’s all about grip and fitting into the tight curves.
There’s something that feels very ‘right’ about a fin sitting on top the channel. of course you can slightly angle your channels to begin with, which works nicely anyway. See the guys at Channel plugs for supply and the technique of routing the cavity.
Check the video for price. I took so long to make this board that the customer has put on enough weight to need more volume! Same shape as i made Taj in his peak in the 2000’s. See video for dims and volume.
