Archie Gregory was the first to cart cattle from North Tawton to Exeter by road in 1927. At this time, there were a large number of small markets and the railways was the traditional way to transport the cattle.
Typically, the cattle would need to be loaded in the early hours of the morning and walked on foot from the railhead to the market in Exeter. Archie was able to load the cattle at 7:30am and have the cattle at market by 9:30am. Farmers were quick to realise the benefits of this and livestock transportation soon became a big part of the business.

With a light covering of snow on the ground, this brand new AEC Ergomatic cab named "Virginian", is being coupled up with a Crane Fruehauf van. Regular loads for this Pollock van were carpets from Widnells factory in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.

This year we used 7.3 million litres of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) which achieves an 85% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel.
In total, by using low carbon fuels in our fleet, we prevented 7,000 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted into the atmosphere. 🌍🚛

This is the calendar from 1966 which was produced to promote the work Gregory offered at the time. From cattle haulage to furniture removals - it was a varied offer!
The tradition of printing calendars is one that has returned to Gregory Group in recent years. Today our calendars feature photos from our employees who entered our Photo Competition throughout the seasons.

Meet Simon - he is one of our Goods-In Supervisors helping to keep our warehouses running efficiently. On his 25 year work anniversary we asked him to tell us a bit about the role:
👋 The Role
As Goods-In Supervisor, I make sure all incoming goods are received, checked, and ready for the night shift to pick and distribute. It’s all about keeping things moving smoothly!
👥 The Team
We’re a tight-knit crew of eight (sometimes ten in peak season) – from tray washers to floor staff – all pulling together to get the job done.
⏰ A Day in the Life
My day starts at 6am (usually an hour before the team) to set everything up. On a quiet day, we handle 6,000 cases – but during peak season, that can soar to 20,000!
💡 What Matters Most
Two things: looking after my team and getting the job done.
✅ Why I Stay
It’s rewarding to see the impact we have. If we don’t do our part, the night shift can’t operate and customers don’t get what they need.

In this photo bitumen is being loaded at Eggesford Station on a 7-ton B.M.C diesel ready to be delivered to local councils and farmers.
This photo was shared in a 1961 Commercial Motor article which also explained that, at that time, all maintenance and repairs of the 18 vehicles in the fleet were carried out at a public garage rather than in-house. Conveniently, that garage was located right next door to the Gregory site.

🚛 From Driver to Desk: A Journey to Transport Operations
Stuart joined us as a new driver and is now a Transport Operator. We quizzed him about his role and his transition to life behind the desk. Here are some snippets:
📋 I manage 13 drivers and vehicles, coordinate deliveries, handle customer calls, and generally just keep everything running smoothly.
🏆 Success is when every cog turns smoothly—loads delivered, trailers serviced, drivers confident, and customers happy.
💬The first-hand knowledge of driving really helps me in my current role because I know how challenging it is out on the road.
