First of all I wanna say thank you to @schliedercontemporary and the @paperpositions team for giving me the opportunity to show my paintings at this beautiful art fair in Berlin’s former airport Tempelhof for the very first time! Already on the first evening, I was able to shake off my usual stage fright and (thanks to the feedback and a few sales) fully enjoy the fair! Although I had to say goodbye to one of my favorite pieces from my ink portfolio, in the end gratitude toward my new collectors outweighs the loss.
Now, after two art fairs and two exhibits in one month I’m extremely tired and really happy to be back in my studio again.

A selection of ink paintings by Gregor Kalus - currently on view at our booth 54 @paperpositions Berlin. The paper art fair takes place in the historic Tempelhof Airport and runs until Sunday May 3.
At first glance, the works of Hamburg-based artist Gregor Kalus (*1980) appear almost photographic—quiet black-and-white compositions reminiscent of early photography. On closer inspection, however, lines dissolve, contours recede, and the viewer is drawn into a process of completion: absences are imagined, identities intuited, relationships presumed. What emerges is a deliberately fragile search for proximity and connection that ultimately resists any definitive resolution.

I’m insanely grateful and a little proud to be exhibited in a group show alongside icons like @alexkatzofficial , #robertlongo and @donaldsultan . Thanks to a collaboration between the Frankfurt based galleries @schliedercontemporary and @galerie_raphael , my works will be on view at both locations starting tomorrow. Come by and check out works by the artists mentioned above and other great contemporary artists like @peerkriesel and @john_franzen_art

A decade of experimenting with the same black ink on exactly the same block has almost inevitably shaped a distinct voice of its own, one that now largely defines my artistic identity. Over the years, my love for this medium and its unpredictability has grown steadily. In particular, the uncontrollable element of chance - which makes every painting unique and unrepeatable - ensures that the number of possible outcomes remains virtually infinite. Nevertheless, I constantly strive to develop my own visual language in other areas of painting as well, so that my ink work doesn’t ultimately become a monochromatic prison. Thank you for joining me on this journey! PS: Here is a small selection from the past few weeks of work.

German readers of “Die Zeit” may have stumbled across my paintings recently. As a part of a fairly new cooperation, I feel very honored that my works are being used to accompany articles in such a renowned newspaper. Only the context and their interpretation occasionally make me question my own mental health.
I mean, domestic violence, Trump, femicides… is my art really that hopeless? But all joking aside!
At the end of the day, it’s the greatest possible appreciation for me, that my art is allowed to depict such serious and existential topics! Because it tells me, there is some depth to it. And thats exactly what I’m looking for every time I’m in the studio!

I spent the whole summer in the studio working on my solo show @schliedercontemporary in Frankfurt. In the end the gallerist and I were spoiled for choice to find the best possible selection. A couple of days after the opening I feel like we’ve made the right choices. Nevertheless, some favorites always fall by the wayside. Here are a few of the works selected and left behind.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see them in person:

The paintings from my ongoing delirium-series are always created in a phase of acute mental overload. Recurring periods in which personal frustration, fear of failure and lack of ideas reach their temporary peak. The painting process itself functions as an artistic reset button that ultimately seems to save me from complete madness. The spontaneous choice of color is derived reflexively from my acutely prevailing mood. The feverish, semi-conscious layering of strokes with the oil-stick creates a seemingly three-dimensional, confusing structure that reminds me of my childhood nightmares. Regardless of their size, the resulting paintings seem to represent mere fragments of something much larger, the extent of which cannot be grasped. Usually they loose their terror in the next morning and surprise me with an almost harmonious complexity. So probably they are just suitable projection surfaces for my own emotional state.
But judge for yourself visiting me at the @schliedercontemporary stand at the upcoming @art_karlsruhe
