WOO! With the wrestling market heating up, our eyes turn to the 1982 PWE Wrestling All-Stars set. Considered the most important wrestling card set ever made, this Ric Flair hails as one of the key cards in the set that started it all. With a 1952 Topps-level reverence in the hobby, these are getting more and more tough to find. The set was produced by Pro Wrestling Enterprises and distributed through mail-order ads in The Wrestling News magazine rather than traditional retail packs, and estimates suggest fewer than 2,000 sets were produced. Before this set, wrestling cards were mostly regional issues, magazine inserts, or obscure international releases. This was the first set that truly consolidated multiple national stars into a recognizable collectible release. We have an MBA powered Sunday Showcase today, with the evergreen Nolan Ryan rookie and its Milton Bradley variation headlining it! The Milton Bradley variation is one of the 3 variations of the Nolan Ryan RC and only beat in scarcity by the 1968 Venezuelan issue. These were included in the 1968 "Win-a-Card" board game in clear cellophane packs with mixed-sport Topps issues of the year, and is recognizable by the bright yellow backs and signature white edge strip due to the mixed sheet printing process. The game wasn't very popular, so surviving copies are tough to get a hold of, but you can grab it, and matching pack issue, at the same time! Other highlights include two MBA certified gold PSA slabs of the W517 Gherig and 1922 EASTERN Exhibit Roger Hornsby, as well as some MBA slabbed 50's Mantles. Expanding upon the inaugural 1921 issue, the 1922 Exhibits release offers more of what made that release so hobby-defining. Large format, thick cardboard cards that were distributed from penny arcade dispensers as opposed to the then-typical tobacco or gum packs, showing the game's historical post-war growth out of the deadball era and cementing itself as America's pasttime. This was the birth of the golden age of baseball, and we couldn't have gotten a better representation of it if we tried. We got some good ones ending today! Back in the 60s and 70s, Topps issued a variety of limited distribution "test issue" releases. These were experimental, regional releases that played with new designs, new materials and different formats other than the standard trading card releases.
