The year 1999. This was the official shake down of my blue and white ef8 crx at streets of willow during the scca double racing school. The real story starts after the 3 days no sleep finishing the car for the racing school.
The 5-Day War for the License...
They told me I wouldn’t get my racing license that weekend. I missed the driver’s meeting, the car was fighting me, and I was running on zero sleep. But the canyons don't raise quitters.
Day 1 at Streets of Willow was a disaster. First time RHD, tire rub burnt a hole in the supercharger piping, and the trans started grinding. I was shooting black smoke and limping through passes. The Steward basically told me to pack it up.
Instead of quitting, I hauled the EF8 back to Fullerton. Stayed up all night pulling the trans, moving the supercharger, and reinforcing the piping. No sleep. Just fabrication and focus.
Day 2: Showed up late again. Brian (Scobby) from Pro Car Innovation was crew chiefing. The Steward laughed and said, “Enjoy the track time, but you’re not getting the license.”
I took all that frustration out on the asphalt. I wasn't just driving; I was hunting. Apron to apron, solid consistent apexs, clean overtakes, absolute rocket ship energy. I drove like my soul depended on it.
After the final heat, the Steward called me into the admin garage. I watched everyone else get their certs. I was the last one left. He looked at me and said, “In good faith, I can’t deny you. That’s some of the best driving I’ve seen. Where did you learn that?”
“Canyon racing,” I told him.
He just smiled. “Canyon racers make the best drivers. Here’s your license.”
I was almost in tears walking back to the car. loaded the car, headed home and slept for I'm pretty sure two days straight. The Blue & White EF8 didn't just get shaken down—it got baptized. #EF8 #CRX #WillowSprings #ef8crx #BuiltNotBought
