No I did not MAKE my kids sleep with my Obie.
I just ASKED if they wanted to.
When they said no, I accepted it.
I only said it made me WONDER if they loved me.
So relax.
In my rambling speech I didn’t get to thank the specific people responsible for me being anywhere near an award.
Theresa Rebeck, despite being a masterful and prolific lion of letters, and a terrifically insightful director, has for some reason entrusted me with her work several times. And truly trusted me. Waits for me to exhaust several bad ideas before gently steering me to something good. Thank you
@rebecktheresa for the hilarious and heartbreaking part and play.
Some have posited that Staff Meal was actually a pretty faithful stage adaptation of the James Cameron film, Titanic. I agree, and attribute that to its success. And also because brilliant vanguard artists Abe Koogler and Morgan Green created such a deeply funny and sad and mind-bending world together, that all I had to do was walk into it. Thank you
@abekoog and
@easybeinggreen for letting me be a part of it.
Marin Ireland has been an acting idol of mine for many years. When I’m making a choice in a play I think WWMID, (what would
@marinireland do), and because our director
@mariadizzia has acted with me a bunch over the years, she already knew that most of what I do onstage is imitate Marin. (Unfortunately for Maria, I’m usually imitating Marin in the Sarah Kane play Blasted, but that’s a whole other post!) Maria truly helped me navigate playing and plumbing the depths of the many characters I had the pleasure and honor of becoming in Marin’s beautiful and devastating playwriting debut. Thank you for inviting me in! (shoutout to magical multi-hyphenate CD/producer
@tayw817 )
You’ll notice the award doesn’t say BEST anything. That’s because I’d be lucky to be in the top 5 best actors in any of these shows, and one of them only had 4 actors.
Instagram only allows 400 words so I can’t list all the amazing actors I worked with in the 3 plays cited, but that just means I can post about winning an Obie again later this week, and do it there. See you then!
