We only regret that our stamps, beautiful as they are, can only show a fraction of the quirky and charming and weird and wonderful highway that stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of this iconic highway, it’s a great time to visit this summer. Thank you, David!

In 2016, I watched the documentary, Best of Enemies, about the televised debates between intellectuals Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr., filmed during the 1968 presidential election. It was wildly entertaining and I was riveted at what some are calling the dawn of pundit politics.
And while acerbic insults were in full bloom, underneath the punditry was a sense of mutual respect and a decorum that I regarded as decency. It’s a good watch.
This week USPS issued a stamp commemorating one of them, William F. Buckley, whose conservative philosophy helped shape a generation of political thought. As art director, I am especially honored to have worked with Dale Stephanos (@dalestephanos ) whose brilliant portrait captures the vision and personality of the great intellectual.

I’m so pleased for these new USPS Forever stamps to be issued. The United States Postal Service is hosting an international show in Boston next year, so these stamps are intended to commemorate and create awareness for the event.
I served as art director, but all the credit goes to Dan Gretta—@dangrettadesign —for his brilliant illustrations and typography of colonial Boston.
The printing method is called intaglio—what most people think of as engraving—and provides an intensity of color, depth, and texture. Beautiful!

Although I wanted to honor my dad with the new stamp issuance of Fishing Lures, I want to be sure to thank @cramerphoto for bringing something magical to something otherwise quite ordinary. Sarah Cramer Shields is that special kind of photographer whose enthusiasm bleeds into her exquisite work and I am evermore grateful for how she made ME excited about this project.
The photograph above is an unedited outtake of Sarah’s work with our fishing lures. I know the little hooks punctured her fingers innumerable times, so she quite literally suffered for her art.

When I was a little boy, my dad used to take me fishing. I was fascinated by his tackle box, rusty and beaten up, and filled with colorful fishing lures. I wasn’t allowed to touch them because I couldn’t be trusted with sharp objects, so my fishing bait was confined to earth worms. So I knew he’d love these new fishing lure stamps, but sadly he passed away before they were issued, and I’ve since been hesitant to speak about them too much. Art directing these SpongeBob postage stamps was exhilarating. Collaborating with the good folks at Nickelodeon was childlike fun in the most professional of ways. They were a creative dream team!
