Steeped in the tradition of Maybelle Carter, Norman Blake’s highly personal flatpicking style combines complex picking and strumming patterns with harmonized melody lines, syncopation, and fretting-hand embellishments. In this Peghead Nation course, Greg Schochet breaks it all down systematically, so you can emulate Blake’s rolling, fluid playing. The course includes lessons on how to play many of Norman Blake’s best-loved songs and instrumentals, like “Hand Me Down My Walking Cane,” “Church Street Blues,” “Billy Gray,” “Randall Collins,” and many more, all with detailed notation/tab. Happy 88th birthday yesterday to my #1, Norman Blake! Listening to and playing his songs will always amaze and inspire me. I recently had the good fortune to film an instructional course for @pegheadnation on Norman’s style, and the venerable White Oak Swamp was one that I covered. I’m playing my Henderson 12-fret guitar here, made for me very much with Norman’s style in mind.
