Every new beginning is just another beginning’s end.
A few years shy of retirement, Frank Lilly was unexpectedly laid off from his corporate job. Decades of investment, gone overnight. So he did something unexpected. He went to Michigan and learned to build a boat.
Because there may be no better metaphor for starting over than building a boat.
When Taryn Smith was ready for her own new beginning, she stepped onto a sailboat alone and crossed the Atlantic.
This month’s cover of Omaha Magazine brings those two stories together. Taryn on the Atlantic, in Frank’s boat.
Now, full transparency. The boat is not seaworthy and not quite the scale of what Taryn crossed in, though not by much. This was a prop. The ocean was a warehouse. Lights, a hazer, a hose, and a lot of imagination.
Huge thanks to Greg Lilly for bringing his dad’s boat, built alongside his father and brother, and helping us tell this story.
And to Taryn, for being all in.
