#Interview: Greer Muldowneyâs (@greerest ) "Rhetorical History" explores how language and photography shaped womenâs suffrage history, revisiting moments, such as Sojourner Truthâs âAinât I a Womanâ and the Tennessee ratification vote, to reveal how gendered narratives continue to influence our understanding of feminism and human rights.
The artist shares: "I vaguely remembered Sojourner Truth's speech and was surprised to find through research that her iconic ´Ainât I a Woman´ quote had never actually happened. ... Photography has a complicated history of being perceived as factual, or a mere document of something that happened. This document is photographed at an angle and the text drifts in and out of focus, meaning the primary title quote is what is the most legible. I wanted to acknowledge the unconscious and parallel slip of photography and history to be authored, and therefore deserving of interpretation."
This work is currently on display with the traveling exhibition A Yellow Rose Project (@ayellowroseproject ) through November 30th.

Itâs always humbling to be on a wall with other great artists, and the current group exhibition at VCP is truly no exception. A piece from my âHowâs the Weather?â collaboration with @davegreer will be included in âOf Land & Place,â an exhibition juried by Karen Haas and Sharon Harper, and I thank them for including me! Copies of our book will also be in the book store.
âSince its invention in the mid-19th century, photography has been thought of as a way to hold onto things that we hope never to lose. So, it should come as no surprise that so many photographers today center their work on our increasingly fragile connection to the natural environment. Faced with ever more uncertain times and our growing understanding of landscape as the site of collective memory and complicated histories, these artists represent a broad range of responses to ideas of land and place.â
âOf Land and Placeâ will be on display @vcpbrattleboro from March 7 April 27th.
I will be sitting down with artist and friend @toni.pepe to discuss her "Mothercraft" series, the significance of using the archive, and how we truly "SEE" women in our visual culture. You have to register via @leicagalleryboston , but it's free! Please join us! For what it's worth, this should be a lot of fun!
Saturday, January 25th from 12-2PM at @leicagalleryboston

Lesley MFA in Visual Arts program is thrilled to announce the appointment of five new faculty members for our upcoming June residency! In this post we highlight artist, educator, and curator Greer Muldowney.
Greer Muldowney is an artist, photography professor and independent curator based in Somerville, Massachusetts. Her work often tackles the relationship of policy making and how it affects landscape, housing and community. She received an undergraduate degree in Political Science concentrating in Urban Policy and Studio Art from Clark University, and an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
She has acted as the Curator for the Desotorow Gallery in Savannah, GA and was the Regional Coordinator for the Flash Forward Festival on behalf of the Magenta Foundation in Boston, MA. She serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Midway Artist Studios, and is the Founder and Director of Undergraduate Photography Now, an arts organization bolstering the work and professional development of photography students.
Images 1-3, Greer Muldowney, selected spreads from 50 Years, 2022, a limited-edition book of musings on the shifting political and cultural icons that have had a longer lifespan than Roe v. Wade.
Another new collaboration between myself and @davegreer will see its debut at the @bostonartbookfair ! "How's the Weather, Greer?," is a limited edition, double-sided accordion book. This small publication features an ongoing conversation about the end of the world while we fail/succeed in our gardens in Vallejo, CA and Somerville, MA, respectively.
Special thanks to @calebxcole for helping me glue these together instead of making an absolute mess.

If youâre in Somerville on 6/13 @ 6:30m, I hope youâll join @calebxcole and I as we discuss our work, small run books and collaborations.
This event is generously supported by the @somervilleartscouncil as part of their fellowship program. If you are a Somerville artist, I strongly encourage you to apply for this opportunity! A big thank you to @tim.devin and the great folks at the Somerville Public Library for hosting this event. #artisttalk #artistcollaboration #artistbooks
The âCurrents Presents!â Speaker series concluded last night with the amazing curator , @ms_theotyson . Thank you to them, @andrewmroczek and @jovojones for being incredible guest critics, speakers and above all so giving with their time and experiences. Youâve set us up for our finals right! #bcartdepartment #speakerseries #finalstretch
I had the pleasure of photographing many of Bostonâs iconic Frederick Law Olmsted parks and greenways for @yankeemagazine . This piece, written by @milesperhoward , was a great way to revisit the Emerald Necklace and the beautiful public green spaces we share in our city. Many thanks to Heather Marcus for tapping me to photograph this series, and to those of you who joined me on the âresearch.â
Highly recommend getting to the @fitchburgartmuseum to see @studiogabrielsosa âs amazing exhibition, âNo Vehicles in the Park.â It was a true delight and sobering to hear his process of using the text of our justice system to explain its short comings and âliteralâ readings of the past and present. Also on view is the incredible installation work of @cicelycarew , not to be missed! #cicelycarew #gabrielsosa #fitchburgartmuseum
The latest edition of @newrepublic features a photo illustration from the collaborative book âAre You an Americanâ @calebxcole and I did. Thank you to The folks at TNR for including us in this Win McCormack piece, âThe Failure of a Public Philosophy: How Americans lost faith in the possibility of self-government.â Check it out on News Stands now!
