Greenleaf & Blueberry® Artisanal Watercolors

I would like to introduce my husband and G&B co-owner Matt to those of you who don’t yet know him. Matt is the mad scientist behind our recipes. Our colors are a true collaboration, really a decade plus long conversation, as we work together - me thinking in pigments and painting characteristics and he in calculations and chemistry. Matt is also an athlete whose curiosity and determination have taken him deep into the North Cascades, the Rockies, and the Himalayas. Our company at times gets pats on the back for being woman-owned, but we wouldn’t be here without Matt’s tireless work and exacting standards. We are a mom and pop shop. Happier to be in the background, it is easy to miss him! So here are a few things you may not know about Matt: 1. He still used a flip phone until a couple of years ago, and only switched because it stopped being supported on our network. 2. He is an excellent cook that commands an ease in the kitchen that only comes with understanding the underlying chemical reactions in play. 3. He cannot carry a tune to save his life, but our children love his singing anyway. 4: In addition to rock climbing, mountaineering, and backpacking, Matt also enjoys triathlons. He is a person always in motion. 5: His hair never looks like this. It is usually stuck out in all directions or under a hat. I invite you to share a few things about yourself with him - your favorite trails, favorite place you’ve lived or travelled, which kind of tire you have on your car and why, or a favorite recipe. Salutations! This is me, Jess Greenleaf, founder of G&B and the heartbeat behind the pictures and writing you see here and on our website. Second pic is also me 🌱 Originally from Kansas City area, I have also lived in Florence, Italy, Paris, France, Bellingham, Washington, Cole Camp, Missouri, and currently delight in living on the western slope of Colorado. I pretty much stay on topic here because I don’t think I’ll run out of ideas or things to say about pigments or watercolor anytime soon. So, here are some things I enjoy beyond the world of watercolor: 1: I love to garden. Heirloom veggies are an obsession. I’ll talk tomatoes with passion nearly equal to that of watercolor. My gardens are usually a bit unhinged because I haven’t figured out how to reign in my ambitions to match my bed space. Fellow gardeners, PLEASE tell me your favorites seed varieties! 2: I also love to sew. Mending socks or making costumes for my daughter on my antique treadle machine are my favorites. 3: I have studied Spanish, French, Latin, and German and know just enough of each to be very confusing when traveling. 4: I am a hapless cook with absolutely no intuition in the kitchen… but I really love it anyway. I started eating whole food plant based last year. As a kid that was raised on KC BBQ, that’s not one I saw coming. But I love the extra energy and simplicity. 5: Running and backpacking have been lifelong refuges. I’ve never been all that fast, but the time spent moving over terrain, taking in the sky and surroundings is what I enjoy most about it anyway. Musing about plants and birds will have me always stopping, checking my field guide or binoculars if I have them with me. I also always have snacks packed, which will generally soothe any impatient companions. I would love to know 5 fun facts or things you’re into about each of you and where you are! Our Wildflower Watercolor Palette is BACK! The first few desert blooms told me it was time.
