An important essay in this weekend’s Saturday Paper cuts through the spin on the Maryvale Mill case. It questions the $400M claim on taxpayers, pointing to the global decline in demand for white copy paper, not the end of native forest logging, as the real driver. Worth a read. Link in bio. #GFNP

Last Saturday, a group of wonderful humans came together for a trail run with Majell Backhausen (@majellb ) as part of our Trails & Tales series. Singletrack was enjoyed, snacks were consumed, koalas were spotted, and great conversation was had amongst the beautiful forests around Warburton. Thanks to all who came! #gfnp

Happy birthday to the maestro Sir David Attenborough. May we all be a little bit more like Sir David in our fight to preserve nature. "The maintenance of an intact ecological system is the only way to ensure the continued existence of biodiversity, safeguard water supplies and provide spiritual nourishment for ourselves and future generations. It is for these reasons, and for the survival of the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, that's why I support the creation of the Great Forest National Park for Victoria." Are you joining our TALES & TRAILS Plant Walk & Gawk this Sunday April 26th? It’s looking positively balmy with a low of 11°C and a top of 21°C, perfect for a gentle forest walk along Tanglefoot Loop. Being Autumn, and fungi season, there will be plenty of awesome plants and fungi to gawk at. We’ll meet some of the iconic plants of the central highlands of Victoria, like the tallest flowering trees on earth to the native orchids that call the ground story home. We meet at Monda Car Park a bit before 10:30am. We will run a safely briefing together before beginning our Plant Walk & Gawk. Please BYO your waterproof/warm jacket, solid shoes, water bottle & snacks. Kids are welcome, no dogs though cos they’ll scare away the critters. Let us know you are coming by registering for free on the eventbrite page, you’ll find a link to it in our bio. @wotch_inc @crookajordan @vicnationalparks #GreatForestNationalPark #PlantWalkAndGawk #VNPA #WOTCH

Today is Earth Day, and this year's theme is "Our Power, Our Planet." It reflects the truth that environmental progress is built through everyday actions, by communities, educators, and families all protecting where we live and work. On the weekend, @greatforestnp held their second Tales & Trails event, a gravel ride through the Central Highlands of Victoria. The series brings together adventure, citizen science, and storytelling to connect people with the proposed Great Forest National Park. We cycled gravel roads through the Yarra Ranges, passing through Stringybark forests as they transitioned into Mountain Ash, the world's tallest flowering plant. With stops for snacks, lunch at Starling's Gap, and coffee in Warburton, the team is building a growing community of people who love our backyard and want to protect it. Check out @greatforestnp for upcoming advocacy events including possum surveying, community walks, and trail runs. 📍On the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People. @earthdaynetwork @patagoniaaus @wildearthaustralia #EarthDay2026 #OurPowerOurPlanet #mywildearth

Our second Trails & Tales event took place on Saturday, with a wonderful group of people joining the Gravel Grind. A tree-filled loop saw riders climbing high above the Yarra Valley, stopping for lunch at Starling’s Gap and enjoying the sunshine. Coffee was shared after soaring back down to Warburton, with everyone swapping stories and laughter. Thanks to all who came. Great Forest, great people, great nature and great movement. That's what getting out in the bush is all about! Wonderful photos by @nigel_abello

A recent solo mission bikepacking The Billy Bunyip Overnighter. With a small weather window and free public transport in Vic, I figured I'd make the most and get back on the gravel bike.  The route connects the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Trail with the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail via Bunyip State Park, riding along double track and gravel roads through tree ferns and Mountain ash forests, all part of the @greatforestnp . The fun part is that three years ago I stayed at this exact campsite on my first ever bikepacking trip. I made a lot of mistakes during that overnighter. Since then I've covered over 19,000km, across 14 countries, and I think I've learned a thing or two on the bike.  Cheers @marlsharrison for the great route. Introducing TALES & TRAILS Plant Walk & Gawk on Sunday 26th April, 10:30am til 12:30pm. Autumn is the most beautiful time to look deep into the Great forest understory and learn about the incredible and complex ecosystems of dirt, fungi, moss, ferns and trees. Join Jordan Crook @crookajordan from @vicnationalparks and Blake and Jake from @WOTCH_inc to survey for plants and fungi in Toolangi state forest. The Great Forest is the water source for over half of Victorians. Humans are 70% water. So if you drink water in Naarm you are part of our Great Forests! The VNPA team needs more people willing to do citizen science surveying for both plants and animals to support the Great Forest National Park proposal. Anyway jump on Eventbrite to join us and learn heaps about the Great Forest! 📍 Toolangi, Vic 📆 Sunday, April 26th 🕒 10:30am til 12:30pm 👟 Walk the whole loop 7.2km, all abilities welcome. Wear warm waterproof clothes and shoes. 🎟️Free tickets on eventbrite, link in bio.
