Our last group outing was reserved for students from our 6-week long Introduction to Nature and Wildlife Photography Class taught at Portland Community College - Community Education!📸 A few of us braved the early and brisk morning and met over 600 Sandhills cranes a few hundred snow geese, a bold kestrel, a vocal red-tailed hawk, and a lucky encounter with a bald eagle at Frenchman’s Bar in Vancouver, WA. Students got to put their skills to practice on thousands of subjects and beautiful landscape scenery. One of our favorite ways to connect people to wildlife and nature is through photography! We spent time talking about wildlife behavior and how to use our observation and senses to set up our cameras for “the shot,” conservation and wildlife-human coexistence through the work done by @columbialandtrust , and the importance of urban areas green spaces and inner-city recreation to propel conservation. This was by far one of our favorite outings this year and we’re so grateful to end the 2025 season with some raucous dinosaur-esque Sandhills cranes. Photos from students coming soon! A big thank you to @kylecarnesphoto for joining us on the outing and providing insight and technical help!

🍂And just like that, we wrapped up our events and workshops for the 2025 year! We’ve been quiet over here trying to balance life, taking care of ourselves and showing up as best as we could while thinking about the impact we have in this crazy and hectic world. You all know how it is! Over the last several months, the classroom looks incredibly diverse with being invited as a guest presenter for early-career professionals and students at @portlandstate campus and virtually with @youngvoicesofscience . 🛶Ever tried canoeing, kayaking, and paddling and using that as a classroom? Well, we did with @columbiaslough and was invited to talk about salmon ecology! At our class at Portland Community College, we invited @kylecarnesphoto to be a guest instructor and the students were stoked to leave with plenty of information. Alongside some incredible collaborations and partnerships, we met some enthusiastic people in our workshops with @oregonmetro that learned fly fishing basics, tree identification tips and tricks, and explored wildlife photography at some local urban parks🌲 It’s been a really fulfilling, heartfelt, and tiring last few months, but I’m so grateful to be able to co-host and host outings and provide opportunities to connect and learn AND continue learning from others myself.

We had the opportunity to be the guest speaker for @columbiaslough September’s Slough Science: Salmon the Slough event! A gorgeous day for a paddling event along the Columbia slough with over 20 engaged and curious attendees, incredible staff and volunteers from the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, and Anna Le of Grayling Education. The group was greeted with river otters somersaulting in the water, a great blue heron, a chattering kingfisher, a group of white pelicans, and plenty of unseen fishes swimming lurking below our kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards! A discussion about the history and present day solutions of urban waterways, highlighting crucial salmon habitat and the effects of restoration attempts, and talking about the adversities migrating salmon face when returning to natal spawning grounds made for a wonderful learning event. It also helps that the classroom is on the water and our desks were various water crafts😉 For future events and offerings, stay updated at graylingeducation.com/workshops and please visit and follow along the Columbia Slough Watershed Council with volunteer and educational outings!🐟

If you’re wondering what we’ve been up to, your girl was busy getting the degree! While building and running Grayling Education, educating and hosting the many workshops over the last two years, I was also balancing being a full-time graduate student. I’ve officially have a M.S. in Science Education from Montana State University! From broadening my experience as an ecologist, incorporating my skill sets as an informal educator, and gaining more formal knowledge of curriculum building, instructional designs, assessments, and standards, it’s been a journey of growth that could only help me introduce more programming and workshops that are conducive to learning about conservation and science! There’s lots more to say, but for now, I’m excited, inspired, and grateful to see how Grayling Education shows up and the people I’ll meet and get to educate along the way😊 Thanks for being patient while we continue to increase capacity and offerings and for the support!
