In this imagined world, turtles are no longer born carrying the shells they once had.
Long ago, human wars spread across both land and sea. Chemical pollution and destruction altered the forms of countless living creatures, and turtles were among those who suffered the most. Over generations, mutations began to appear, and some turtles started to lose the protective shells that had once symbolized their species.
To survive, they searched for substitutes. Scattered across abandoned battlefields were countless helmets once worn by soldiers. The turtles began placing them on their backs, using them as new shells.
They do not know which armies these helmets once belonged to. They do not understand nations, ideologies, or war. To them, a helmet is simply something that fits their body—something that protects them.
Sometimes two turtles walk side by side. One carries an American helmet, the other a German one. In the human world, these helmets once symbolized enemies.
But the turtles do not know that.
Many of these helmets still bear faint writings—words left behind by the soldiers who once wore them.
“home is the goal.”
“War is hell.”
“Don’t follow me, I’m lost.”
The turtles cannot read these words. Yet they quietly carry them across time.
Years pass. The helmets rust, moss grows over them, and coral begins to form.
Nature slowly tries to reclaim what war has left behind.
And yet, new helmets continue to appear in the world.
The turtles keep walking.
And on their backs, the remnants of human conflict become something else—
a fragile shelter for small lives that simply wish to survive.
🐢Story🪖
Once upon a time, there was a very beautiful place.
There, animals and plants lived in harmony.
However, human greed overflowed and eventually overtook that beautiful place.
The turtles called it 'd-day'.
In the form of radiation exposure, bombardment, and biochemical contamination.
The humans started fighting each other as if they were going to eat each other.
There was nothing visible, and they started destroying everything they saw.
The strange thing is that they only killed each other and did not eat each other.
This is how the so-called world war broke out.
How many world wars did it take?
Animals don't know that.
That was the end of it.
As a result, the plants and animals living there underwent mutations, and turtles were one of them.
The polluted air, water, and soil swelled their bodies like pufferfish, and their limbs began to twist as gas escaped like a hole.
The once sturdy shell shriveled up like a dried plum, and shrunk and shrunk until it was smaller than a raisin.
It didn't stop there, but it kept getting smaller and smaller until there was nothing left.
Keep in mind that this was still a war, and no one dared go naked on the battlefield.
The turtles needed something to wear on their backs right away.
They tried empty cans, hardcover books, tote bags, kilt bags, duffel bags, hobo bags, etc., but they were all a bit lacking. Then, when they saw the helmets covering the heads of the corpses rotting here and there, the turtles must have thought the same thing.
They must have thought it was the perfect shell.
They cut the chin strap of the helmet with their sharp mouths and put it on inside out.
It was nothing compared to a real shell, but it was still the best.
Depending on their body size, it was either too small or too big, but it was clear that they had enough helmets.
The smell of fear that I had never smelled before continued for a long time starting from ‘d-day’. Some animals and plants came running after smelling the blood and enjoyed eating the corpses, but it didn’t take long for the ground to dry up.
That’s how the time of fear lasted for a long time after ‘d-day’.

From last year up to this year, Grayturtle pieces have traveled to about 28 countries around the world.
Each piece goes through an average of 30–40 production steps, and since just two of us are handling the entire process, we haven’t been able to take orders very often.
Even so, thanks to all of you who have cherished my work and supported me, I’ve been able to continue creating consistently.
I will keep doing my best to meet you more often with better pieces and exhibitions in the future.
My sincere gratitude goes out to everyone who loves and supports Grayturtle. 🐢🪖
