Organization is half the battle!
For me, one of the most important steps in my daily work as a mixing and mastering engineer is proper session preparation. This allows me to work quickly and efficiently.
The most important steps for me are the following: Color-coding the individual tracks. Each instrument is always assigned the same color to make it easier to navigate. This saves a lot of time when scrolling through the session.
The tracks are carefully reviewed and then named correctly, always with the same logic.
The structure of the track is analyzed, and each song section is assigned a marker to quickly navigate through the song, such as the intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, etc.

Is mastering still necessary in 2025?
We have normalization in streaming, AI mastering, and mix engineers simply use a limiter and call it a day.
So… has the line between mixing and mastering disappeared?
Honestly? Sometimes, yes.
But here's what I've learned after listening to countless mixes and masters over the years:

It's no longer just about loudness.
It's about:
- Compatibility with various playback systems
- The final sonic refinement
- The final assessment of the mix by a mastering engineer
Whether you do it yourself or hire a pro – mastering is still the last opportunity to step back, take a look at the whole picture, and ask yourself:
"Does this sound like a professional recording?"
The truth is:
Even the best mastering tools can't save a poorly mixed track.
Mastering is the finishing touch, and sometimes that finishing touch is the difference between an average and an outstanding result.
If you skip it, ask yourself: Is the track finished or just bounced?
