Here’s some footage of @gradytesch writing these incredible piano and string parts. He captured the feelings of this song so effortlessly that I cried while we were working on it — it felt so natural and so real to the feelings I had while writing the lyrics. He also wrote all the string parts on a score pad with a non-mechanical pencil which is pretty iconic.

Before I ever started crafting songs for Yellow Couch Music, I was taking piano lessons from Grady Tesch (@gradytesch .) Those sessions were foundational. He deepened my understanding of harmony and chord structure in a way that continues to shape my writing. I was immediately struck not just by his chops on keys, but by his fluid, expressive playing on the vibraphone. In my opinion, he’s one of the most gifted jazz players in the city right now. What blows me away is how naturally he transforms my hip-hop and pop song forms into something with real jazz sensibility without ever losing the soul of the original idea. I’m incredibly grateful to know him and to have the chance to create together. The Nublu release marked our first time sharing a stage, after three years of collaborating behind the scenes on Yellow Couch Music material. It was pure joy.
