With the badass amount of talent attached to TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY, I was hopeful this new season could finally yank this franchise back on track. Sadly, after only a few episodes, there are several times where this new instalment feels like a comedic satire of badly-made police TV shows. The melodrama is hilariously scooped on, and with several distractingly-bad performances, you’d swear this show got partial funding from an Atlantic Canadian film grant.
Unfortunately, just having sad, angry people crying and yelling at each other does not make for engaging television. This is a surprising disappointment coming from Issa López, who I think is a filmmaker of considerable talent. While her wheelhouse has been with drama and character pieces, she does not seem to grasp the nuances of a police procedural drama, which is more apparent with every episode.
Hiring a writer/director with a good track record for hard-hitting dramas does no good if they’re not familiar with police drama television. Understanding that subgenre is important to know which narrative cliches to avoid. Sadly, within the first few episodes, there’s already a large amount of very tired tropes on display (ghosts leading people to clues, war flashbacks, loose-cannon ‘I hate everyone’ cop characters, unnecessary dramatic subplots and very bad music drops, etc.)
It is clear that writer/director Issa López is out of her depth with this material. Kali Reis’ first episode also brought fourth some strong concerns about her skills as an actress. Thankfully, she’s gotten better with every episode. Meanwhile, when Jodie Foster doesn’t have to wrestle with bad dialogue, she’s every bit as good as she’s always been and her dramatic skills elevate even the dullest moments of the script.
I’m still optimistic that this season can pickup some steam and end strongly; but unfortunately, this feels like a show made by people that did not understand the assignment … and didn’t even bother to try.
As ‘GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE’ has finally been released, here’s some onscreen props myself and a buddy were gifted by an acquaintance who worked on the film, including screen-used ectoplasm.

While we place so much importance on showcasing success, I think for the betterment of all of our mental well-being, it's just as important to highlight frustrating, dirt-eating rejection -- of which I have ample. After months of wonderful email back-and-fourth (and my optimism curiously high), I just received a shiny, new rejection letter to go with all my others. This was certainly not news that I needed today (or this year), but ultimately I hope it will prove useful in shedding more light on the mental quagmire that is the creative pursuit. As I am too dumb to scare easy, it's back on the horse for me; and hopefully onto greener pastures with future endeavours...
