ORANGE CRUSH is here! I’ve loved fortune-telling novelties (the plastic red fish, magic 8 ball, fortune cookies, Zoltar, etc) for a long time. Many of us have sensed that Dave knows a lot more than he’s able to communicate with humans, so it only made sense to turn him into a fortune-telling tool himself (although most of his answers are cryptic).

“Time well-spent” is a line from The Bear that stuck with me. Olivia Colman’s character is a big shot chef and in one scene she’s doing something really mundane like peeling mushrooms, I think. Cousin asks why she’s doing it (because she could have anyone else in the kitchen do it for her) and she answers that it’s “time well-spent.” Maybe it’s cringey to admit the origins of something that’s been my North Star in the last two years, but I can’t help who I am!

To be clear, I do not want my old domain back, because I’m trying not to use that name anymore, and there are much better uses for 4,000 dollars (printing 40,000 pages at the library for instance). Ceramic croissant by @arlolee

Not to get all Stephenie Meyers on y’all, but I’m starting to make playlists based on the general mood of what I’m writing. There’s more about it on my newsletter, along with the rest of this draft I’m working on, but sometimes I’m baffled by the mental gymnastics I did to make things work out with someone who wasn’t right for me. Call it “Unhinged Lovergirl Behavior.” ❤️🔥
Trying to get back in that mindset, in order to write empathetically to that version of me but also knowing what I know now has been a really good exercise.

Let me tell you about a place called Squishington’s.
Two years ago, my life was totally torn apart. I came back to Lawrence broke and broken-hearted after several lonely years in Germany. The thing I needed most was a sense of purpose and direction; something that fell neatly into my lap when my friends Jhami and Rachel offered me a job at the candy shop they’d just opened.
Squishington’s was more than just a business. There was magic there — I know that sounds cheesy, but that’s the only word I have to describe it. This was a place where grandparents could reach their surly teenage grandkids, because suddenly they could connect over a sweet they’d never tried, but that the grandparents remembered fondly. A place that gave anyone who crossed the threshold a chance to try something new, regardless of whether or not they planned to buy anything. From the coziness of Lawrence, you could still taste a specialty from Turkey or Spain or Sweden or Thailand. It was an invitation to break out of the mundane in an accessible way. It strove to be a place that a kid could enter with a dollar and make out like a bandit - not many places like this exist anymore. Nostalgia and novelty were represented on those shelves in equal measure, serving as many people in Lawrence as possible.
Over that counter, I got the chance to change people’s minds about black licorice, share interesting candy history, hear people’s memories about childhood candy they thought was definitely gone. Customers became regulars whose tastes I got to know. Sometimes I felt like a DJ, but for candy - I could say “hey! If you liked that, wait until you get a load of *this*!” I loved that job. I loved the people. I loved the chance to connect over the most universal of human tastes: sweetness.
What happened at Squishington’s was wonderful. That will never go away. I am gonna hold it in my heart and my mind forever. It was and is special to me. Goodbye and thank you, Squishington’s.

NEXT UP: Jason Anderson, Brendan Mott and Futchdog on Saturday, September 20th at the White Schoolhouse.
Tickets now available @wonderfair and @lovegardensounds . Your ticket includes a detachable stamp for use at the concert where you can send a postcard to a friend using the Punk Postal System. If you’ve ever dreamed of being a letter carrier, this is your chance!
Poster, tickets, postcards, and stamps all deigned by the inimitable @gracedcorndog who’s been designing posters for us since the very first LAAND show. Printed on the RISO @kucolorbar and perforated in Andrea’s kitchen.
About the show: We hosted Jason at the ECM back in March and, let me tell ya, that was something special. It’s the kind of show that reminds you about the power of music and the joys of gathering together in community to experience it.
After the gig, one attendee wrote, ”Man, that Jason Anderson show was transcendent! I’ve listened to his music for years, but the live show... it’s something else. Completely medicinal. Like an anarcho punk Springsteen meets Mister Rogers. Felt very special. I will never miss one of his shows after that. Very transformative.”
So please join us on September 20th for another memorable evening with @jasonandersonmusic out at @whiteschoolhouse . Local troubadours Brendan Mott (@app1esauce99 and @futchdog.lfk open the show.
The @vermontstudiocenter hosted open studios today and I decided to take advantage of my workspace looking neat to do a little tour.
