‘(Un)bound’ by @gracebaey | @objectifscentre Hi everyone, this is Emmeline Yong @emmeyong , Co-founder and Director of @objectifscentre , a photography and film centre in Singapore that aims to cultivate original voices in visual storytelling, and to inspire and broaden perspectives through the power of images. I’m signing out with my last post for the IG takeover this week! Thank you to @womenphotograph @_mallorybenedict @dzalcman for this amazing platform, and much love to the wonderful photographers who have generously shared their projects as part of this takeover. For practitioners from Southeast Asia, South Asia and East Asia, Objectifs has an Open Call for our Women in Film & Photography Showcase in 2023, with the theme ‘Bodies’. Please visit @objectifscentre link in bio for details! * For my final post - Grace Baey @gracebaey is a Singapore-based photographer and filmmaker. A human geographer by training, she’s especially interested in issues of place, identity, and belonging. Through portraits, journal entries and scrapbooking, the stories of Jose, Sham, Averyn and Sonia, reflect on experiences of struggle, resilience, and coping strategies amidst the challenges of gender norms in society. Had fun photographing Speak Cryptic's most recent work at The Arts House, 'The Same Side of the Moon Always Faces Earth' for @artsequator . I didn't know this prior, but the moon rotates exactly once every time it circles the Earth, which means that we always see the same side of the moon. What a wondrous thought. For Speak, this represents the idea of having a true north, pointing us forward. Really appreciated the conversation we shared about art-making and being. To view the photo essay, do check out the link in my bio. Thanks @nabbycat for trusting me with the visuals!

To round off the year, some friends and I have organised a print sale, with 50% of proceeds going to the Singapore Children's Society. The theme is “Wonder”, and I contributed this image to the print sale. Made this image near Forest City along Johor Strait when land reclamation works was taking place. The scale of development was astounding, which made me wonder about the future of urban development, and our responsibility to the natural environment around us. The intertidal fringe is home to Malaysia’s largest seagrass bed, offering critical nursing ground for species such as seahorses, dugongs, and dolphins, now under threat. It’s also a lifeline for the local fishing community in the area. There are many amazing photographers who have contributed their works, and hope you can check them out through the link in my bio! Print sale runs till 6 Dec. . The Wonder Print Shop features prints by @julianatan.co @amritachandradas @lavchang @khoogj_ @puayyang @jovian.lim @xmunkongx @nghuihsien @hforhozzie @panroll @zakariazainal

A historic and unprecedented moment for the Workers' Party @wpsgp in Singapore’s 2020 General Election, and my heart is full. Whilst 10 out of 93 seats for the opposition may seem modest in the grand scale of things, the tide is turning with more Singaporeans voting for greater diversity, transparency, and accountability in Parliament. So glad to be able to experience this moment, and stand alongside WP supporters at Hougang last evening, where the celebrations lasted till the wee hours of the morning. Having spent time with the WP candidates in Aljunied, Sengkang and East Coast GRC this past week, I must say that they have given their all, tirelessly campaigning and engaging with all the residents, and we didn't disappoint! ✊🏼 #ge2020 #sgelection #makeyourvotecount #wpsgp #workersparty

I had the privilege of spending time with the youths at Action Cambodge in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in December last year. Founded in 2012, the organisation provides Cambodian youths living with intellectual and developmental disabilities with safe shelter, skills training, as well as socio-emotional support. They run their own jam factory to provide a source of income for the youths. When I spoke with them, many shared that prior to coming here, they weren't given the opportunity to be independent or learn new skills, as the people around them didn't think that they were capable. Pictured above is 23 year-old Chamroan with his partner on the way home from work. Through the organisation’s recommendation, Chamroan found work at a hotel and now lives with his partner in their own home. So far, the organisation has supported over 20 youths with job opportunities (including Sok Khuoch in the following picture) to lead independent lives outside of the shelter. Staff members check in regularly with these youths to ensure that they have continual social and emotional support. Link to full story: /2019/11/home-haven-hope/index.html

Pictured above is 32 year-old Srey Noun with her best friend Srey Pov, working together in the kitchen. Srey Noun is the life of the Action Cambodge community with her sweet demeanour and gentle spirit. She shared that at a previous NGO shelter she was staying at, she "did nothing, [only] hang out, and sleep", but was now happy to earn an income for herself. It's hard to believe that mainstream society has no place for them. If you're around Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, you may consider supporting their work and buying jams at any of these places: /achjam Link to full story: /2019/11/home-haven-hope/index.html
