On this date two years ago there was a show in Brattleboro that would define the trajectory of my life. Goth Girl Field Trip started as a desire to experience the thrill of revelry in cutting edge youth and counter culture that I had conceptualized as the term rave, at least to the capacity that an atomized anti-scene, and me—with minimal connections and zero experience throwing shows—could realize. With indispensable contribution from wheat paste and GGFT-day-ones we gathered the gear I could find and the few people I knew who made music that fit the envisioned style and brought them to a heavily scouted spot on the bank of the Connecticut. That show felt like living hell for me. I had woken up with a fever, I barely understood the gear I had, and there were countless technical issues. In hindsight I love it for it’s scrappiness and I’m impressed that we even made the show a reality, but at the time I was almost relieved when that show got busted. I remember shaking for days from residual anxiety after that first GGFT. But more days passed and I found I couldn’t forget that unique thrill and purpose singular to DIY organizing. So we had 9 more and several adjacent events all of which were their own adventure, and most went smoother in no small part due to Molly whose guidance GGFT is indebted to. I recognize that GGFT is still a relatively small and developing entity, but even at our current community size I am sent into disbelief when I see signs of its impact. I know of unforgettable bonds that owe their making to GGFT, many of which are mine. And right now reflecting on all of these, and on every time I saw a sticker on some random ass gas pump or alley way or bathroom, every time I saw someone getting joy and release and fun from GGFT or an indebted bond, when I see the breadth of impact GGFT has made, I am brought to my knees in a gratitude so powerful it is ineffable.
I extend this gratitude to Alex, Claire, Adam, Simon, Wylie, Jessica, Molly, Zinnia, Aggy, Bri, Zahra, Weatherly, Terry, Alexys, Lee, Jonas, Rory, Ivy, Hazel, Jaida, .m0lly, and Sev
