During Dr. Cedric's visit to Katsabara group in Virunga National Park, DR Congo, he had the pleasure of observing Kyusa, Ndekesiri's young baby! Kyusa and the other Grauer's gorillas of the group appeared to be in excellent health. Pictured: Kyusa

Every day is a good hair day when you're a baby mountain gorilla! Dr. Fabrice, one of field veterinarians in DR Congo, took this photo of adult female Serundori's baby while checking on the 15 members of Masibo group. All members of the group appeared to be in good health.

40th Anniversary Fun Fact! In celebration of our 40th anniversary, every Friday we're going to share a tidbit about the history of our organization, the health of our gorilla patients, and our team. We begin by introducing you to Leon N., who has been with Gorilla Doctors since 1986. Forty years! Leon manages our regional headquarters in Rwanda.
According to Leon, his favorite part of the job is cooking and he loves gorillas because of everything it has allowed him to accomplish professionally. Give Leon a 'round of applause' in the comments and have a great weekend!

Yesterday, Dr. Adrien checked on the mountain gorillas of Kwitonda group in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. While they were unable to find silverback Kungahara, he was able to observe the other 20 members of the group. All appeared to be in good visual health, including juvenile Ntarungu (1st photo) and dominant silverback Karevuro (2nd photo).
Last month, silverback Karevuro was showing severe symptoms of a respiratory infection. On April 20, our veterinary team intervened by administering antibiotics via darts. We are happy to see that he has since made a full recovery!

Accompanied by @virunganationalpark rangers and trackers, Dr. Fabrice conducted a routine health check on Wilungula group last Friday, May 1. Of the 39 mountain gorillas in the group, he was able to observe 36 -- and all 36 appeared to be in good health. Enjoy some of the beautiful photos Dr. Fabrice took during his doctor's visit!

Last week, our veterinary team checked on the 15 members of Amahoro group in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Adult female Umutuzo appeared to have some brownish discoloration to her haircoat but her overall body condition appeared otherwise normal. The other members of the group appeared to be in good health. Pictured: silverback Bigwi

Last Thursday, Dr. Fabrice checked on the health of Bageni group, the largest habituated mountain gorilla group in Virunga National Park. Based on his observations, Dr. Fabrice noted that all members of the group appeared to be in good health.

Earlier this month, Dr. Nelson checked on Kanywani group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. The group appeared to be in good overall health, though adult female Musingye displayed some browning of her haircoat which could be an indicator of gastrointestinal parasite load. Musingye is also part of ongoing veterinary monitoring efforts for age-related cataracts.
Fortunately, Musingye continues to demonstrate normal activity levels and behaviors with no evidence of visual impairment. She will continue to be closely monitored.

These before-and-after images show silverback Kabukojo, leader of the Rushegura group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The first image was taken in 2025, and the second during a health check conducted on April 23 by Dr. Nelson.
The group was in good overall health, and several gorillas that had previously been treated for gastrointestinal parasite infestations showed a clear positive response to previous deworming treatments. Changes like these help Gorilla Doctors assess how treatments are working and guide ongoing care.
Regular monitoring like this helps ensure gorilla families have the support they need to stay healthy and continue thriving in the wild.

Looking back on last week’s 40th anniversary launch, we’re reflecting on how far Gorilla Doctors has come 🤩
For four decades, Gorilla Doctors has been treating eastern gorillas in the wild, one patient at a time. What began with a single veterinarian in Rwanda has grown into a dedicated team working across Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC, helping ensure gorillas can stay healthy in their natural habitat.
We’re proud of how far this work has come and grateful to everyone who has been part of it. Join us as we look ahead to the next 40 years!
