🎶 Known for its unique metric structure, Bulgarian music often described as having “crooked rhythms”, because they do not follow the even duple or triple patterns found in Western music.
🥁 With “Yovino”, we explore a mesmerizing, off-kilter pulse that challenges dancers to internalize the rhythm deeply rather than relying on standard symmetrical beats.
🪘 The 7/16 measure typically divides as 2+2+3, and the 11/16 measure divides as 3+2+3+3. Together, they shape the movement and phrasing of the dance.

We had an fantastic time representing Bulgarian folk dance and traditions at the @daltonschoolnyc this weekend! 🚌✏️
For their annual Multicultural Festival, four members of GORANA (Eleonorra, Angie, Vivian, and Lily) danced “Kopanitsa”. 💃🏼👯
There was an exhibit showcasing traditional Bulgarian clothing, figurines, and Easter egg creations 🪺🪆as well as a map of Bulgaria 🗺️ and explanations of our traditions and culture. There was even a Polaroid exhibit 📸 where you could take a photo in front of the Valley of Roses! 🌹⛰️
