If you’re struggling with a reactive dog, you’re not alone. The barking, lunging, and overwhelming walks can feel discouraging, but it doesn’t mean your dog is broken or that you’re doing everything wrong. Reactivity is tough, but it’s also trainable. You don’t need to be perfect, you just need the right tools, the right guidance, and a plan that actually works for your dog. There is hope. You’re not failing. You’re just not finished yet. Here’s terrier mix, Copper, showing reactivity at the beginning of training 🆚 overcoming reactivity toward the end. Copper and his mom put in an IMMENSE amount of work to get through this together, and I can’t commend his mom enough for putting in the effort. Hard work truly pays off and we couldn’t be prouder of this team 🫶

Struggling with a reactive dog? Here are 3 tips to help you work through it: 1️⃣ Establish a clear marker. Your dog needs to know when they’ve made the right choice—not just when they’ve messed up. Too many people only correct without clearly communicating what they do want. Your dog should be paid well for making good choices! A clear predictor of a reward is crucial in getting your dog’s attention. 2️⃣ Be proactive, not reactive. If you see a trigger coming, create space before your dog explodes. Get their attention early and set them up to succeed. 3️⃣ Loosen the leash. Tight leashes create tension…literally! A relaxed leash can mean the difference between frustration and focus. Many people tend to freeze or panic when a trigger appears and just hold on for dear life. Change directions and keep your leash tension-free. A tense leash can create reactivity where there otherwise wouldn’t have been any! Karl is a 9 year old, rescued American bulldog mix that is typically friendly with other dogs, but struggles with reactivity on-leash! This is common for a lot of dogs, and we hear all that time that clients’ dogs “do well at the park” but “just not on leash.” They may feel trapped on leash, taking the situation into their own hands (paws) by overreacting. Karl’s mom used to be worried taking him on walks due to this behavior, but leash reactivity is something that can be worked through in training by improving handling techniques and by teaching your dog how to pay attention to you. Great work to Karl and his mom for continuing to work through this every day! 👏🎉🐾 #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #obedience #dogobedience #mixedbreeddog #mixedbreed #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #bullybreed #dontbullymybreed #americanbulldog #bulldog

Want a reliable off-leash dog? 👀🏔️ Listen up!!! ☝️ Off leash training starts on leash, whether you’re outside OR inside. 🏡 (A leash on in the house is a completely foreign concept to a lot of people, but you have to trust the process) So many people are in a rush to get rid of their leash when they’re training their dog. I always recommend at least 30-90 days of being on leash… ALL. THE. TIME. Jumping on guests? Use your leash Not coming when called? Use your leash Counter surfing? Use your leash Not listening in general? You guessed it… use your leash It’s what you do after you give the command (not how many times you say it, that makes the greatest impact). Discipline now = freedom later Train your dog so they can go on adventures with you.

How the heck do you get your dog to listen anyway? 🤔 The theory is simple….✨NEVER give a command you CANNOT enforce or DO NOT INTEND on enforcing✨ CANNOT enforce ➡️ be prepared to follow through! Have a leash on your dog at all times until they are reliable. Have rewards on you to motivate your dog. Set your dog up for success by training in places that aren’t too challenging for them. Watch your dog, don’t leave them unattended. DO NOT INTEND on enforcing ➡️ Don’t issue a command if you’re going to give up on following through with it. Hold your dog accountable to what they know. If you ask your dog to do something once or twice and they don’t do it, help them! Teach your dog a clear release word (examples of this are “break,” “free,” “OK”) to let them know they’re done working. Very important for your dog to know when they’re working and when they’re not! The key principle 🔑 is to be prepared and intentional about what you do. Whether you realize it or not, every interaction you have with your dog counts as “training,” even if it’s not a “training session.” The way you interact with your dog every day sets a standard for your expectations with your dog. Our dogs can only be as consistent as we are 😉 #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dog #obediencetraining #behaviorist #balancedtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraininghouston #dogobedience #dogbehavior

Many dog owners believe socializing your dog means bringing them out to meet every dog and person, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Socialization is all about getting your dog acclimated to new situations, sounds, and settings while keeping them relaxed and neutral. Here are some do’s and dont’s of socialization: DO ✅ Let your dog observe their surroundings ✅ Start at a distance away from distractions ✅ Reward for check ins DON’T ❌ Let your dog rush up to strangers ❌ Overwhelm with noise or crowds ❌ Push past your dog’s limits Allowing your dog to run up to every dog or person they see can even encourage reactivity later on down the road! Set the expectation for calm, collected behavior early on by encouraging your dog to relax and be attentive to you as much as possible. Keep sessions short and fun! Consistency is key! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dog #obediencetraining #behaviorist #balancedtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraininghouston #dogobedience #dogbehavior #caninetraining #clickertraining #trainwithlove #smartdog #trainyourdog #gooddog

Separation anxiety can be tough to solve, but with consistency over time, it can be done! The trick is to establish a routine with a predictable flow so that healthy separation becomes a default habit. Solving separation anxiety requires a multi-pronged approach 1. Teaching your dog how to settle after exercise 2. Teaching “stay” to introduce healthy separation 3. Crate training to reduce destructive behavior Consistency is key when building a new habit. The goal is for your dog to learn how to relax into your routine and feel less anxious about your departure. Are you struggling with helping your dog work through their separation anxiety? ☎️ BOOK A CONSULTATION CALL through the link in our bio so we can learn more about how we can help! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dog #obediencetraining #behaviorist #balancedtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraininghouston #dogobedience #dogbehavior #caninetraining #clickertraining #trainwithlove #smartdog #trainyourdog #gooddog

Dog training is one of those things where you get what you put into it. It’s just like going to the gym! You just have to get the reps in, and you don’t get better just by hiring a dog trainer. 🏋️ Dog training is a lifestyle change. It’s the sum of your interactions with your dog and how you live with them on a daily basis. Do you encourage calm behavior in the house, or encourage chaos? Do you negotiate with your dogs on the small things, or are you firm with your boundaries? Some dogs are easier to live with, but for the people that put in the work training their dog, they know its not “luck”…it’s all sweat, tears, and a commitment to doing better. 💪 Dog training is a team effort. Are YOU ready to do better for yourself AND your dog? 😎🐶 📥 DM us today to learn more about our dog training programs! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dog #obediencetraining #behaviorist #balancedtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraininghouston #dogobedience #dogbehavior #caninetraining #clickertraining #trainwithlove #smartdog #trainyourdog #gooddog

Does your dog check out right after taking a treat from you? You might need to adjust your reward delivery! 🥸 Don’t fall into the trap of becoming a “human treat dispenser.” Reward delivery should be interesting and impactful. The goal with using a marker is for your dog to always get excited, anticipating that the marker is followed by a reward (or reward event)! It’s like knowing when payday is. 💰 Your marker isn’t JUST a sign your dog’s going to get a treat, it’s also a tool in your training toolbox. You need a strong marker to work through behavior issues like reactivity, fear, or anxiety. 👀 So keep your reward delivery interesting and engaging - that will improve your dog’s attention and strengthen your training overall! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #houstondogs #houstondogtrainer #houstondogtraining #htx #houston #htown #shelterdog #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #dogsofinstagram #dog #obediencetraining #behaviorist #balancedtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtraininghouston #dogobedience #dogbehavior #caninetraining #clickertraining #trainwithlove #smartdog #trainyourdog #gooddog
