Kofi didn’t plan to stop here. He was passing through — the way he always was, the way his father was before him. But the souk pulled him in the way souks do: copper pots catching the afternoon light, saffron and cumin piled into mountains, the sound of ten conversations folding into one warm roar.
He found a stall. Reached into his pocket. Passed the notes across without breaking eye contact — calm, unhurried, the way a man moves when he has nothing to prove and everything to offer. The vendor sized him up. Kofi let him look.
He wasn’t a stranger here. He was a customer. And in any market worth its salt, that makes you exactly who you need to be.
Batefego on his chest. The whole world at his fingertips. He moved through it like he’d always known it was his to move through.
