Engineers Country Club is one of one. The metro-NY club is in one of the most competitive golf course districts in the world, which is probably why it flies under the radar. It would be hard to imagine a suburban parkland course with more personality, thanks to some wild topography and a world-class set of greens. No less an authority than Mark O’Meara once likened them to Augusta National’s greens. I choose to take the ‘98 Masters champion’s word for it.
Relevant nugget: Engineers hosted the 1919 PGA, won by Jim Barnes. A year later, Chick Evans defeated Francis Ouimet in the final of the U.S. Amateur. Heady history. Fantastic golf course full of moxie and quirk.

There is not too much I can add to the lore and literature surrounding Shinnecock Hills (course #708), which I played as part of 2026 U.S. Open Media Day. It lives up to the considerable hype not just as a rigorous, sometimes brutal championship golf course but as a place to simply exist for several hours on a cool, breezy, nearly cloudless spring day. More to come, but for now, wow.

Lifetime course #707 is Island’s End Golf Club in Greenport, New York, wayyyyy out on Long Island’s quiet North Fork. I made a last-second twilight tee time ($39) and was rewarded beyond all expectations when I arrived at the par-3 16th hole on the Long Island Sound. The rest of the course is pleasant parkland midcentury fare with very good bones. Come play here late one sunny afternoon and enjoy.

Lifetime golf course #706 for me is Anson Point Golf Club, a new private club within the vast @palmettobluff community in South Carolina’s coastal Lowcountry region.
As always, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw let the land lead them to an interesting routing, while they and on-the-ground associate Ryan Farrow created an engaging, well-tempered mix of holes so well suited to their environs that they feel practically inevitable at times. I am reminded of Frank Lloyd Wright’s insistence that homes be “of the land, not on the land” - Anson Point is very much *of* the land.
Anson Point also ends up being a subtle counterpoint to the surging width of many other new golf courses. Corridors are generous without bloat and tee shot-shaping and trees are part of the essential character - and charm - of the place. Full marks.
