Ready to hit the water? 🎣 Here is your quick guide to getting a B.C. freshwater fishing licence for the 2026-27 season using the WILD system! Steps to get your licence:
1️⃣ Log in: Visit the WILD system online. You can use your BC Services Card app or a Basic BCeID.
2️⃣ Get your FWID: If you don't have one yet, you’ll need to complete your profile to obtain a Fish and Wildlife ID (FWID). This replaces the old Angler Number
3️⃣ Buy: Select "Buy Fishing Licences" from the menu, choose your licence type, and pay.
While fishing you must carry your FWID and photo ID. If you fish where a Conservation Surcharge Stamp is required, you must carry an unmodified paper or digital copy of your licence. When a Conservation Surcharge Stamp and retention record are required, you must carry an unmodified paper copy of your licence to record your catch.

Shrimp (or 'scuds') are the backbone of a trout's invertebrate food sources in B.C.'s Interior lakes. Rainbows and brookies that consume a steady diet of freshwater shrimp will have an appealing, deep-orange flesh and rich flavour. These tiny crustaceans are available year-round, making them another must-have pattern in your fly box.
Pro Tactic from the Blog: Trout and char that see a fleeing shrimp will quickly chase it down. Use short, but fast 10- to 15-centimetre-long (four- to six-inch) strips interspersed with regular pauses to mimic their natural movement.

✨ The Golden Fighter: Horsefly Rainbow Trout
Hoping to reel in a heavy hitter? The Horsefly strain rainbow trout is known for growing big (in Quesnel Lake, they can attain weights of more than nine kilograms / 20 pounds) and fighting hard! 🌊 They exhibit a distinctive golden tone, and thrive in environments where they’re in competition with other species.
🎣 Quick Tip: Horsefly trout will readily take lures and dry flies. In larger, mixed-species lakes, try using a downrigger and lures that imitate minnows or kokanee.

Fishing with kids: Expectation vs. Reality? 🎣 Keep it a "win" and make sure they want to come back for more. If you’re taking the kids out this weekend, here are our top tips for a successful day on the water:
✅ Location is key: Choose a spot with a high success rate. Check the map on gofishbc.com for stocked lakes near you! 📍
✅ Short & Sweet: Keep trips brief and entertaining. Always finish on a high note so they’re excited for next time. 📈
✅ Preparation: Practice casting at home before you head out (pro tip: take the hook off the lure first! 🚫🪝).
✅ Pack more snacks than you think you’ll need. Trust us. 🥨🍎
✅ Stay Flexible: Focus on the fun, not the fish count, and always have a backup plan!

Every fly box should have a selection of leech patterns. Leeches are a readily available food source found in all types of lakes. The spring period which coincides with the most intense chironomid hatches is an excellent time to be tying leeches.
At this time of the year leeches may be found swimming at all depths. Try fishing patterns close to the bottom first then gradually move up the water column. Use a moderately slow hand twist retrieve to imitate the natural undulating motion. Fast sinking (type II), slow sinking (type I), intermediate sinking and floating lines are all good choices for imitating leeches at various depth levels.
Leeches are found hiding in and under aquatic vegetation, woody debris, and rocks that line the bottom of the shallow or shoal areas of a lake. Trout will often feed on very small leeches, which is why micro-leech patterns are so effective. Leech colouration varies with the habitat they are living in, but black, brown, and shades of green are common. Remember to keep an eye out for real leeches swimming by to give you an indication of actual colour and size in the lake.
