He carries the Was-scepter indicating his power to bring health where there is disruption, and the Ankh, the symbol of eternal life.
Initiation into his cult was an arduous process, and the apprentice had to give up much to learn to read and write sacred texts, understand the deep mystery of the hieroglyphs, and become one of the Ibises of the Temple.
Many know the 'Book of Coming forth by Day', most commonly referred to as the 'Book of the Dead'. The 'Litany of Rē' or 'Book of Praying to Rē in the West' is one of the most important texts from Ancient Egypt, reserved for pharaohs and favoured members of nobility, inscribed near the entrance of a tomb.
Part one invokes the sun in 75 different forms.
Part two is a series of prayers where the pharaoh assumes forms of nature and of the sun god. It is to be recited "every day when Rē goes to rest in the West".
