I am loving @namtaartmaterialsassociation I went to Products Palooza last night —- tons of new artists’ materials were available to try. I can’t tell you how many samples I went home with….but it was a lot! So hard to choose my favorite, but I love this MELTZ blender pen from @holbeinartistmaterials It so easily blends color pencils — it’s like magic! I don’t usually use color pencils but I think I’m going to start! Another reason to add paper tape to your materials box! Yesterday I showed how to make a larger image transfer by layering tape strips together. I pulled up a section of a dictionary page. Today I’m adding that to the background of a new mixed media collage I’m making. It might be hard to see, but I adhered a page to the substrate first. Then I layered the image transfer tape on top. It gives a very interesting look because you see the first dictionary image underneath the paper tape. The second part shows me adding a piece of paper tape directly onto the paper in order to create a horizontal line. With the paper tape you get a transparent look such that the line is hardly noticeable unless you know where to look. Adding directional lines to your work is one way to make your work pleasing to the viewer. It gives them grounding points when observing the composition. I go into detail with this in tomorrow’s class and I show you many many more ways to compose with success! Today’s paper tape tip!!! Thank you to everyone who is enjoying these paper tape reels.!!! It keeps me motivated to make more. Today’s tip is actually two in one: 1. Join multiple strips together to remove a large image. Make sure to overlap a bit. This also gives you lines that can be used for added direction in your art. (If you want more info about that sign up for my class). (Link in bio) Secondly, for maximum transparency, use mod podge on the bottom and the top. Mod podge comes in matte and gloss and it has an ingredient that helps with more transparency. It has the same properties as resin. You can also gloss medium as it has the same ingredient. My Bernina and Me ________ Analog mixed media collage on paper ________ I read an article recently about Josh and Anna Dugger. He is currently in prison while she is at home raising their seven children. It stated that while he is in prison, he frequently writes her asking (begging) her to send “sexy” photos, stating that he needs them to get by. I am often thinking about the role a woman plays in a traditional family setting. Imagine that here she is — husband in prison and she alone is raising those 7 kids and doing everything to keep her family going. This collage emerged after reading that article. I thought about the femininity and societal norms put on her by juxtaposing a nude woman’s body in a suggestive “sexy”pose with a sewing machine replacing her face. The sewing machine symbolizes her traditional domestic role, highlighting how women’s identities often become overshadowed by societal expectations and her husbands need for photos. The contrast between the organic form and the mechanical object invites viewers to reflect on the commodification of female bodies and the tension between a wife’s duty to her family and her husbands lack of compassion and empathy for her. Yes! Dollar Tree for the win! This is Fixx brand paper tape. It is $1.25 located in the health care section by the band aids. This tape has a soft matte finish so it’s perfect for any mixed media that needs a transfer image that matches their shabby-boho aesthetic. i’ve shown this trick before, you want to use a newspaper, print paper, old book pages or sewing pattern paper. You put the tape over the image you were wanting to pick up then quickly lift it. The image will be picked up on the back of the tape and you can then add it right to your mixed media. It will still be sticky, however, you might want to add a bit of glue stick or matte medium just to make sure it stays there. There are other brands of paper tape, make sure it says on the package it is made of paper and not a glossy tape. #imagetransfers #imagetransferart #imagetransfertechnique #mixedmediatape #mixedmediatransfer @dollartree
