A pop of orange hidden among the rocks 🌊🐚 via: @michelles.chelles_ (thanks so much for letting us share 🀍) A diver finds what looks like a Leviathan cowrie tucked into the seafloor, its glossy orange shell standing out against the dark sand. Cowries are some of the ocean’s most distinctive sea snails, known for their smooth, porcelain-like shells and intricate patterns that have fascinated humans for thousands of years. What looks like a polished gemstone is actually living tissue. When the cowrie is alive, it covers its shell with a soft mantle that constantly polishes the surface, which is why their shells appear so glossy and unblemished compared to other sea snails. Cowries have been used as currency, jewellery, and ceremonial objects across cultures from West Africa to ancient China. The classical Chinese character for money was originally a drawing of a cowrie shell. Tiny treasures the ocean has been quietly designing for millions of years. #globe #cowrie #oceanlife #marinebiology #underwater

Wearing the swamp like a crown 🐊🌿 via: @arthur.muller.arts (thanks so much for letting us share 🀍) This American alligator is sporting a thick coat of bright green duckweed, a tiny floating plant that carpets still freshwater across the southern United States. When gators rest just below the surface, the plants drift over them, and they emerge looking like something pulled straight out of myth. Duckweed is one of the smallest flowering plants on Earth, but it plays a huge role in wetland ecosystems. It oxygenates the water, feeds insects and fish, and helps shade the surface, keeping the swamp cool through brutal summer heat. For alligators, this layer is more than camouflage. Resting motionless beneath it lets them ambush birds and fish that wander too close, while also regulating their body temperature without ever needing to leave the water. Equal parts ancient predator and accidental work of art. #globe #alligator #wildlife #wetlands #natureshow

A view from the bowsprit of a working tall ship βš“πŸŒŠ via: @davisj85 and @svflorette (thanks so much for letting us share 🀍) Standing in the rope netting at the very tip of a sailing ship, with nothing but ocean rolling beneath your feet. This is what life looks like aboard a traditional tall ship, where wind, canvas, and rigging still do all the work just as they have for centuries. Tall ships like this one rely on miles of rope, dozens of sails, and a hand-trained crew working together to harness the wind. A single voyage can involve climbing masts over 100 feet high, hauling lines for hours, and reading weather patterns the way sailors did long before GPS existed. Crossing open ocean by sail is one of the slowest, most weather-dependent ways to travel, and also one of the most rewarding. Days are dictated entirely by the wind, the swell, and the rhythm of the sea. A reminder that some adventures still belong to the ocean and the wind that drives it. #globe #tallship #sailing #adventure #oceanlife

A barnacle-covered cave hiding something soft and otherworldly 🌊✨ via: @benji_zecher (thanks so much for letting us share 🀍) What looks like a tiny sea cave from the surface opens into a hidden world inside, where giant plumose anemones cluster across the rocks like underwater clouds. These delicate, feathery animals can grow up to a metre tall and live for decades, slowly filtering nutrients from the cold water around them. The cave entrance is encrusted with countless barnacles and mussels, classic indicators of nutrient-rich Pacific waters. Each one acts like a tiny pump, drawing food particles out of the current and supporting the entire ecosystem clinging to the rock. Plumose anemones thrive in low-light, high-current environments like this, where most other species can’t survive. Their crowns of fine white tentacles aren’t just beautiful, they’re highly efficient feeding tools designed to catch plankton drifting past in the dark. A reminder that the smallest openings often hide the most extraordinary worlds. #globe #plumoseanemone #oceanlife #marinebiology #underwater

A front-row seat to one of Washington’s wildest waterfalls πŸ’¦πŸŒ² via: @mark.flow.22 (thanks so much for letting us share 🀍) This is Falls Creek Falls, tucked deep inside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwest Washington. The full waterfall drops 335 feet across three dramatic tiers, making it one of the tallest in the southern Cascades. The forest surrounding it is classic Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest, where old-growth firs and hemlocks soak up moisture rolling in from the Pacific. The result is that bright, electric green moss carpeting every rock and tree, and the kind of mist that hangs in the air long after the falls have done their work. The creek itself is fed by snowmelt from the Cascade Range, which is why the water runs cold and powerful even into late summer. Down in the gorge, the current has carved smooth basalt channels over thousands of years, polished by relentless flow. The kind of view that earns every step it takes to reach it. #globe #fallscreekfalls #washington #pnw #waterfall
