- Sweet work in the maple woods –
Outfitted with maple sap harvesting and processing equipment from GLIFWC’s ANA grant-funded Anishinaabe-zhiiwaagamizigan (Maple syrup) Project, St Croix Band Food Sovereignty hosted a youth sugarbush class this week led by Wayne Mosay, food sovereignty apprentice/manager.
"The equipment is amazing and perfect for demonstration classes. It is definitely a big change from what I was taught—from a huge cast iron pot to a high-tech evaporator,” said Mosay this week from a northwest Wisconsin Ojibwe iskigamizigan. “The new tools make things easier but it’s still hard work collecting sap from trees. I am just following in my father and grandfather’s footsteps in hopes I am doing what they would have liked, and for me to enjoy what I do."
Good sap flows have Ojibweg and others busy in the maple woods across the north country. GLIFWC’s multiyear iskigamizigan program extends to all 11 eleven member tribes in the Ceded Territory. Learn more from GLIFWC’s Mike Wiggins, project manager at [email protected]
