We always aim to turn our shop display into a mini glass museum, meant to give you deep insight into glass history and craft. Blue is one of the most collectible colour in the glass world, especially cobalt blue. Born from fire over 4,000 years ago, cobalt blue is one of glassmaking’s oldest colours. Just a trace of cobalt transforms molten glass into a blue so deep it feels eternal. First revered in Ancient Egypt, the colour echoed the sacred glow of lapis lazuli—used for amulets, vessels, and objects meant to last beyond a lifetime. It travelled through Ancient Rome, medieval cathedrals, and Renaissance workshops, catching light in stained glass and fine vessels. From the elegance of Murano to the inky depths of Bristol blue glass, cobalt has always been more than colour—it is light made permanent. Ancient. Luminous. Unforgettable. We’ve curated an arrays of cobalt blue glass ranging from Victorian cobalt blue to the 2000s. Every shade and era is represented in this display. We recommend viewing in the morning or afternoon in the shop, drape yourself in blue light and let your mind dance a little closer to the azure. #glassetcetera #vintageglassware #sydneyvintagestore #cobaltblueglass

Today we choose to celebrate peace, love and unity. Terrorism will not win and does not have a place in our society. We’ve spent the last few days mourning our friends, neighbours, fellow citizens who lost their lives in the Bondi attack, we will continue to mourn and will not forget the fundamental freedoms we are afforded in this beautiful country of ours. It’s time for unity, hug your loved ones and hold them tightly, say hello to your neighbours, smile at strangers, be kind to one another, Australia needs this right now. P.S We’re giving away candles, if you’re heading down to Bondi to pay your respect please come by shop.

Continuing our etched glass series with this beautiful shot of antique etched crystal and some historical context into glass etching below. A Swedish chemist discovered acid etching in the 1770s, though it wasn’t widely used for artistic decoration until the mid-1800s. The mid-1800s saw a surge in popularity for etched glass, particularly in England, where it was used for both decorative and functional purposes like privacy in homes and pubs. New techniques like mold etching allowed designs to be etched into the mold itself, creating a frosted pattern on the glass as it was being formed. This made decorative glass more common and accessible. Beyond acid etching, the 19th century also saw a continued rise in cut glass, and new techniques were developed, including many that incorporated colored glass.Ā  #glassetcetera #glass #glassware #interiordesign #vintageglassware #flowerarrangement #decor #interiors #homeware #design #colours #etchedglass #quality #vintagestore #sydneyvintagestore #collectible #vintage #retro #retroshop

Continuing our etched glass series with these wonderful Victorian era hand etched tumblers. FYI: The name ā€œtumblerā€ originally referred to a cup with a rounded or pointed bottom that made it unstable. This design was intended to encourage quick consumption, with the name coming from the fact that it would ā€œtumbleā€ if you tried to set it down. These early versions could be made of glass, but the rounded base was also a way to protect the expensive glass from breaking.Ā  Tumblers became more popular in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, with lead crystal versions being prized for their elegance. At the same time, the design began to shift towards the flat-bottomed glass we know today. 19th century industrialisation made glassware more accessible to the general population. The flat-bottomed, sturdy tumbler became a common glass for spirits and cocktails. #glassetcetera #glass #glassware #interiordesign #vintageglassware #decor #homeware #design #collectible #vintage #retro #sydneyvintagestore #glassemporium #etchedglass #handetchedglasses #victorianglasses
