Last year, on the occasion of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, we created Deep Surfaces: an exhibition exploring the dialogue between architecture, heritage and innovation, imagining new ways to experience and preserve UNESCO sites through immersive and multifunctional design.
Now that the Biennale Arte 2026 has just reopened its doors, we look back with pride at this project hosted at Palazzo Zorzi in Venice and selected as an official Collateral Event of the Biennale Architettura 2025.
Deep Surfaces brought together more than 50 projects across World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks worldwide, creating connections between people, places and narratives.

The commencement of construction on NUMAJ, Autograph Collection Hotel by @marriottintl , marks a major milestone in the delivery of our development pipeline and reinforces our commitment to shaping AlUla’s next chapter.

In collaboration with @_blackengineering_ , NUMAJ is currently under construction and set to open in 2027.
The project will feature 250 rooms in the heart of AlUla’s central core, introducing a new benchmark in contemporary hospitality.
At the crossroads between dreamlike exclusivity and refined simplicity, NUMAJ is conceived as a green haven for wellbeing, lightness, and a new kind of holiday-working lifestyle, where relaxation and inspiration coexist seamlessly.

In this new issue, on the occasion of the Venice Biennale, @gioforma and @hellenboje had the privilege of interviewing @alfredojaar , starting from the memory of his installation created for the 2013 Biennale: “a work that deeply moved us, almost with a sense of discomfort, leaving us suspended between reflection and vision.”
Thus, our architecture column UTOPIA - the New reflected - arrives in Venice the way one enters a whisper: quietly, sideways, slipping into the Biennale as a cultivated and lateral presence. Venice itself, with its reflective surfaces and improbable foundations, continues to embody a tangible form of utopia; and the Biennale becomes its recurring double, refracting desires, tensions, and imaginaries through the unsettled light of the lagoon.

Masterplanning, architecture and landscape design by @gioforma
The project establishes a strong dialogue between built form and landscape, with a bespoke façade design expressing a contemporary reinterpretation of local identity through light and texture.
Inspired by the Nile, water becomes a central design language, shaping fluid sequences of courtyards, plazas, and planted spaces — echoing movement, reflection, and sound.
Rooted in the concept of Kemet, the “Black Land”, the project explores the relationship between earth, water, and vegetation as a spatial foundation across hotel, residences, and retail.
Perforated sunshades and layered volumes define a multi-layered architectural system, where light filtering and stratification create depth, identity, and a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior.
