GHOST IN THE LOOP | Aurélien Buiron

The sound of melting ice 🧊 With my friend Aurélien Buiron, also known as Ghost in the Loop, we created a short documentary about his sound work within glaciers. On September 20, 2025, we headed to Bonneval-sur-Arc 🚞 We climbed to an altitude of 2,900 meters, carrying around thirty kilograms of equipment, to listen to the sounds of the Grand Méan Glacier. The hike was particularly intense, but it allowed us to record the glacier cracking, the ice melting and the water flowing. Using these sounds, Aurélien then composed a piece of music. Nouveau projet incroyable qui vient clôturer cette année 2025, déjà très riche en émotions et en événements. J’ai eu le très grand plaisir de collaborer avec @flavien_berger sur la composition de la bande originale de La Voix des Glaciers, avec la voix de @mosimann . À l’heure où l’année internationale de la préservation des glaciers 2025 touche à sa fin, @mnstr_agency a décidé de monter ce projet avec une équipe absolument inspirante, pour faire entendre la voix des glaciers, une voix qui, à mon sens, n’a pas été assez représentée dans les médias jusqu’ici. Allez donner de la force à cette sublime vidéo en la partageant, vous la retrouverez sur les pages des partenaires identifiés 📌 Un immense bravo à @bartloeff pour la conception du vinyle de glace : la technicité derrière cet objet est complètement folle… et le fait qu’il soit fonctionnel l’est encore plus. Bravo également à @maelsevestre et Clotilde à @imageriefilms pour la réalisation de la vidéo. Et bien sûr, un énorme respect pour toute l’équipe qui a rendu ce projet possible. Je n’aurais jamais imaginé, il y a bientôt 3 ans, quand j’enregistrais Le Chant de la Glace au cœur du glacier de Zinal, que ces mêmes enregistrements seraient un jour portés dans un projet d’une telle ampleur. Et je tiens à le rappeler : tout ça, c’est aussi grâce à vous. Vous qui me suivez, me soutenez, m’écoutez depuis plus de 5 ans maintenant, j’ai parfois du mal à réaliser jusqu’où tout cela m’a mené. De cette quête naît une exposition mêlant photographie 📸, sons 🔊, projections 🎥 et expériences sensorielles. Le glacier y apparaît comme une présence vivante : un espace indomptable, de beauté brute et de transformation intérieure, mais aussi un monde fragile aujourd’hui menacé par le dérèglement climatique. Length variation data from the Zinal glacier (1891–2025), sonified into glacier sound. This is a new experiment I’m currently working on for my live performance on May 30th at @galerie_m_photo , as part of @nathanaeldelachaise ‘s Glacier exhibition. Here, multiple iterations of @manifest.audio ’s DataMidi are used to sonify the dataset, distributed across different modules in my modular system. The subtle cracking sounds come from beehive by @bigtmusicltd , then sent into the Resonant Filter Bank by @ericasynths , getting closer and closer to what I can actually record inside glaciers. Still amazed by how flexible this module is. The ambient drone in the background is generated by Rangoon (Big T Music LTD), using the alternative Mini Elements firmware. I’m just starting to explore this update, but it’s already opening up some really interesting sonic spaces. I can’t wait to present this new performance, Glaciophonic, where synthesized data-driven sound will meet real glacier field recordings, especially those I captured at the Mer de Glace in April 2026, to highlight scientific work and the dialogue between science and art through immersive sound. #modularsynth #ambientmusic #soundscapes #glacier #sonification

18 hours and 30 minutes. That’s the total amount of audio I recorded at the heart of the Mer de Glace on Monday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 21, alongside glaciologist Luc Moreau and @pascaltournaire A slightly crazy project, driven by a simple question: what is really happening beneath our feet, above our heads, behind the walls when we stand inside an ice cave? And more importantly… what does the glacier reveal when all human activity disappears at night? To explore this, I set up multiple recording systems: geophones, hydrophones, shotgun mics, and ambient microphones. From deep inside meltwater-carved ice tunnels to the surface near a small glacial lake, I recorded from late afternoon through the entire night, until the early morning, just before the first visitors arrived. What I heard goes far beyond what we usually think of as silence. These recordings will be used for immersive exhibitions and sound libraries for audiovisual production, but they also carry a deeper purpose: raising awareness. Because despite its worn, almost skeletal appearance in summer, covered in granite carried over decades, the Mer de Glace is still here. It moves. It shifts. It speaks. A deeply moving return from the @unesco_fr World Day for Glaciers at the Mer de Glace, in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. This day will remain forever etched in my memory and in my heart, a powerful blend of science, art, and spirituality. The morning unfolded through inspiring moments of transmission and reflection. Glaciologist Luc Moreau shared his long-standing relationship with the Mer de Glace, its history, and its evolution over the years. @marceglaciar @tefiangel @lightofshari @annielaurefernandez @emilianamolinafajardo offered a beautiful and intimate commemoration centered around water gathered from glaciers across the world, a moment of stillness and contemplation. I had the honor of performing an ambient sonification piece inside the very ice cave of the glacier. Transforming over a century of scientific data on the glacier’s mass evolution into sound, I let the Mer de Glace speak through music. It was profoundly emotional to hear these notes, born from the glacier itself, resonate and expand within the ice, naturally amplified by the element it represents. As an extension of this performance, I captured the glacier’s vibrations using a geophone, striking the ice with my hand and transforming those signals into the sound of a singing bowl. In that moment, the glacier became everything at once: instrument, source, and amplifier. The journey continued with a glacial caving expedition alongside @pascaltournaire , immense gratitude to him for guiding me into the most inaccessible and profound depths of the Mer de Glace. Hearing, with such clarity, the friction of the glacier moving across the bedrock, immersed beneath tens of meters of ice, in total darkness, is something I will carry with me forever. The recordings will be shared soon. I can’t wait for you to hear them, they are truly unique.
