For sea turtles, this isn’t fiction. It’s a reality happening on this net.
This #ghostnet did not stop fishing when it was lost. It became a deadly trap.
Right now, we’re working together with @ghostdivingorg and @sdss.blue to remove this ghost net tangled around a wreck in the Mediterranean.
Because the ocean shouldn’t be a minefield of our waste.

🪢 These photos show the meticulous work carried out by the volunteer divers, carefully detaching ghost nets and fishing lines from the reef structures.
🎯 Removing ghost gear is not only about strength — it also requires precision, patience, and careful decision-making to avoid causing further damage to the habitat.
👻 Over two days, 22 volunteers removed approximately 300 kg of ghost gear from the site.
👏 Huge applause to Ghost Diving Korea for another impactful mission.

👜 What is a purse seine?
🎣 A large fishing net used to catch schooling fish like tuna, sardines, or mackerel.
How it works:
◾️ Set in a circle around school of fish
◾️ Bottom closed with a drawstring “purse”
◾️ Fish trapped inside
⚠️ When lost… it becomes a serious threat.
On the Zimbral Reef 🇵🇹, a purse seine became stuck on the seabed — damaging delicate gorgonian corals.
💪 Thanks to @ghostdivingpt the net was removed and the reef is now clean.

🌊 Scouting the next cleanup site…
🇵🇱 North of Łeba, @ghostdivingpoland explored an unidentified wreck — resting on the sandy seabed.
⚓ Recognised by its exposed propeller, the wreck has become a habitat for marine life — mussels covering its structure and cod looking for shelter.
🐟 During the survey, divers encountered cod fish trapped in fishing lines and gillnets — all safely released.

🇵🇹 Ghost Diving Portugal performed another successful cleanup off the coast of Tróia, at a site known as Zimbral !
This area is home to a rich marine ecosystem — groupers, lobsters, conger eels, and delicate gorgonian coral gardens.
👻 But strong currents also make it a trap for ghost gear.
💪 During a recent operation, a team of 8 divers carried out an underwater cleanup at 36 meters depth.
👻 150–200 kg / ~300 meters of ghost gear was removed.
👏 Huge respect to Ghost Diving Portugal for tackling another challenging and impactful mission.

33m deep off Catalina Island — a fishing vessel wreck that never stopped fishing.
⚓ 225 kg of seine net recovered
📍 ~100 m² of seabed freed from ghost gear
Built in 1958.
Sunk in 2011.
Still trapping marine life today.
