Όταν σκεφτόμαστε την θαλάσσια ζωή, συχνά θαυμάζουμε τα πολύχρωμα ψάρια και τα μεγάλα ζώα, αλλά αγνοούμε οργανισμούς που δεν φαίνονται τόσο «εντυπωσιακοί». Ένας από αυτούς είναι το θαλάσσιο αγγούρι.
Τα θαλάσσια αγγούρια (ολοθούρια) καθαρίζουν τον βυθό, ανακυκλώνουν θρεπτικά στοιχεία και βοηθούν στη διατήρηση υγιών κοραλλιογενών υφάλων. Δυστυχώς, απειλούνται από την αλιεία φάντασμα, την υπεραλίευση και άλλες ανθρώπινες πιέσεις.
Μπορεί να μην τραβούν το βλέμμα με την πρώτη ματιά, αλλά είναι οργανισμοί ζωτικής σημασίας για την υγεία των ωκεανών. Η προστασία τους ισοδυναμεί με την προστασία της θάλασσας. 🌊

When thinking of marine life, we often admire colorful fish and large animals, but overlook less “charming” creatures. One of them is the sea cucumber.
Sea cucumbers clean the ocean floor by recycling nutrients and keeping the seabed healthy. They help coral reefs and support marine life in quiet but powerful ways. Sadly, they are threatened by ghost fishing, overfishing and other human impacts. Lost fishing gear and damaged seabeds can be deadly for these creatures.
They may not stand out, but sea cucumbers are vital for healthy oceans. Protecting them means protecting the sea. 🌊

Τα θαλάσσια απορρίμματα δεν προέρχονται πάντα από τη θάλασσα. 🌊 Τα περισσότερα από αυτά ξεκίνησαν ως αντικείμενα που χρησιμοποιούμε καθημερινά στη στεριά.
Συνήθως παρασύρονται από τα χερσαία ύδατα και τις βροχές και έτσι ξεκινούν ένα ταξίδι ρύπανσης που επηρεάζει τόσο τη στεριά όσο και τη θάλασσα. Ωστόσο, θάλασσα και στεριά είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένες. 🤝 Γιαυτό πολλές από τις υποβρύχιες αποστολές της @HealthySeas συνοδεύονται από καθαρισμούς παραλιών στις γύρω περιοχές.

Marine debris doesn’t always come from the sea. 🌊 Most of the waste found in shallow waters started as everyday objects used on land.
These items are washed downstream, eventually reaching the coast, where they begin a journey that pollutes both land and sea. Land and sea are connected. 🤝 That’s why Healthy Seas complements most underwater missions with beach clean-ups in the surrounding areas.
