branding system for OAC. the whole work came together in such a satisfying way. the collaboration with the folks in the School of Music, Theater, and Dance at @oaklandu made way for the mark being art forward with a healthy splash of secret society.

Oakland Artists Collective is a project funded by the Cultural Arts Ambassador grant at @oaklandu dedicated to exploring interdisciplinary arts between faculty and students in deliberate spaces. Our inaugural show, Pulse and Pixels, is next month on April 8th. Directed by Dr. Justin Lamb, the night includes a selection of music orchestrated by faculty from our School of Music, Theater, and Dance and played by faculty and students. Each selection will be accompanied by artwork, created by students from our Department of Art, Art History and Design, with direction by me. Tickets are now available and free, but seats are limited. I would love to see familiar faces there.

all i keep asking myself is “what world am i leaving my kids?” this is a human crisis. this is a love crisis. i do not care about the legality of it. i do not care about the right or wrong of it. law is not a measure of morality. the system is designed like this, and it benefits from our compliance. i am angry and sad and scared. i know a lot of us are. but i cannot ignore how many of you aren’t. i’ve broken bread with you, shared my time and life with you. i’ve prayed with you. i don’t care what any book or scripture says, if you aren’t outraged, if you’re even complacent, i know i am not safe in your company. i know my kids are not safe with you. i pray there is a hell. you all deserve it.

1. 2025. This year was long in every direction. I grew as a father, a husband, a designer, a teacher, and hopefully as a person. I’m awestruck by the sheer volume of what we’ve all done this year. While rest isn’t yet in the plans for the new year, I love the support around me. The bags under my eyes are a little more pronounced, my hairline is giving up, and I’m a little grayer every day. As of now, I’m able to look at each sign of age with pride, knowing we earned every year and every wrinkle. The only resolutions I’m making are to be more deliberate with time, to put more value on the things that require patience, and to have goals that will take the year to achieve. 2. Love. I wish our efforts to be good parents didn’t come at the expense of our time together, but looking back at the moments we did share, it feels like we did it right. What a good year. 3. Boys. Oliver lost 6 teeth this year. Finley grew into a little child. Both have so much character. And a lot of hair. 4. We have a kindergartener. He can read now. Our bedtime routine went from Oliver staring at pictures while I read him stories, to me tearing up over Oliver reading me the newest entries to Jon Klassen’s hat series. Finley fell in love with gymnastics (or “kinnastics”). He’s so shy and so outgoing. 5. Family adventures. We traveled, went to shows, endured a dozen power outages. We bought a van. We still haven’t come up with a better name for it than “DADIVAN.” We fostered Benny. The boys were sad to see him go. Erika & I also cried, but for other reasons. 6. Teaching. I started the year interviewing for a new role at OU. By fall, I started the new position. The first semester on my tenure track went well. 7. BIRDBOMB STUDIO. This year, I acknowledged the limitations of my creative prowess and partnered with the obscenely talented Jes Augustine. We spent the year exploring the spaces of our collaboration and the vision of the future we want to share. Stay tuned. 8. Community. No work felt more important than the communities we were able to help. 9. Ephemera. Tore my achilles. Got the best tattoo ever. Ended efforts with the team at OC. Invited to presented at MICNP.
