Introducing 2026 Montana Clay Tour guest artist Muriel Condon.
Muriel’s practice explores material transformation through craft, creating tactile moments of comfort and reflection while questioning the unreliability of nostalgia. Drawing from personal memory—shaped by her experience as the daughter of an Irish immigrant—her work weaves together textures, foodways, and fleeting sensory impressions into layered, often paradoxical forms. Playful surfaces and soft structures offer tenderness, humor, and a sense of connection, while quietly reflecting on the instability of collective memory and social narratives.
In her functional ceramics, Muriel continues this exploration through forms that echo historical references—such as potato baskets, farm bells, and yellowware—while existing just outside of time. Handbuilt surfaces retain the trace of the maker, inviting touch and use. Her work becomes an earthen celebration of material alchemy and nourishment, balanced with a subtle, cheeky romanticism.

For Jesse, throwing on the wheel is both a physical and spiritual act—a collision of the sacred and the profane. His work centers on creating vessels that hold and carry meaning, both physically and metaphorically.
Through layered processes—including brush-painted and sprayed underglaze, commercial decals, stamps, and molds—each piece becomes a site for rich, dynamic composition.

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing George McCauley (@ghoc1 ) for my Studio Potter series: Embracing the Squish. This one is out now on the Studio Potter (@thestudiopotter ) website!
George is an absolute hoot as you will know if you have had the opportunity to meet him. He’s a showman and a great storyteller. This came across in our conversation, but I also found a real depth behind his humour. George cares deeply about his pots and what they say. They’re squishy, playful and full of love. His pots are some of the ones I reach for most at home.
