What defines a successful whitewater venue? From first sketch to competition-ready course, Design Director Harry Street reflects on what it takes to design high-performance whitewater venues and why legacy is not an afterthought, but the starting point. As attention turns to the Brisbane Games whitewater course, the conversation about legacy-driven sports infrastructure and community impact has never been more relevant. When good design supports the people who keep a region running, its impact extends far beyond the built environment. Recognising its contribution to community resilience and sustainability, our @begavalleyshire Council Administration and Maintenance Depot project has received a commendation from the @aus_institute_architects at the 2026 NSW Regional Architecture Awards, raising the bar for civic infrastructure developments in regional communities. The refined and functional design approach has delivered a purpose‑built, future‑ready workplace with community-focused operations depot that supports council services, operational efficiency and long-term regional resilience. Congratulations to our project team, Bega Valley Shire Council and all project partners involved in delivering this important regional facility. Our Bega Valley Shire Council Admin and Maintenance Depot project has been shortlisted in not one, but two categories in the Australian Institute of Architects' 2026 Regional Architecture Awards. Shortlisted in the Commercial Architecture and Sustainable Architecture, this recognition speaks to the heart of what thoughtful, purpose-driven design can achieve. Set within a regional context with unique challenges around resources, budgets and essential service delivery, the project unites efficient workflows, modern infrastructure and future-ready systems to support the ongoing operations of Bega Valley Shire Council. More than a workplace, this project is a catalyst for long-term community value and regional resilience. We believe architecture should strengthen the places and people it serves. This shortlist reinforces that belief and acknowledges the collaboration behind a project designed for lasting impact. Winners will be revealed at the Regional Awards Gala in February 2026. We’re proud to share that Port Otago’s new head office in Port Chalmers has been named a finalist in the Best Awards – Private, Public and Institutional Spaces and Repurposed Spaces categories! Designed to bring people together, the three-level building blends public and private spaces to support both port operations and community connection. Sitting alongside a heritage-classified maritime museum, it reflects the rich maritime history of Port Chalmers while creating a modern, future-focused workplace. Inside, the design celebrates Otago’s landscape, the Port’s art collection and a contemporary industrial aesthetic. Exposed concrete, open ceilings and natural textures transform the building’s framework into deliberate architectural features – a nod to both heritage and modernity. At its heart is a vibrant hub that encourages collaboration and connection, flowing out to an outdoor area that links directly to the port. The result is a versatile, welcoming space that fosters teamwork, breaks down silos and creates a genuine sense of belonging. It’s been a privilege to support the interior design and planning of this project. Congratulations to our client Port Otago, building designer Kieran Cooper, builder Calder Stewart and all the other well-deserving finalists! 🔗 Read more about Port Otago through the link in our bio

We’re proud to share that our GHD Wellington fitout has been named a finalist in the Toitanga and Workplace Environments / Over 1000sqm categories at the Best Awards!   Nestled on the Wellington waterfront, this space is more than just a place to work – it reflects the heart and heritage of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Inspired by the cultural narratives of Te Ara Tupua, Tupua-Horo-Rangi/Whātaitai, and other areas of significance, the design weaves indigenous elements throughout, honouring mana whenua and celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.   A huge thank you to Manukorihi Winiata from Toi Digital, whose cultural leadership helped bring our story to life. Together, we translated these narratives into authentic design features – from raranga (weaving) patterns and native flora and fauna, to a central artwork where each interwoven strand represents our core values.   With panoramic views of the city skyline, the Beehive and the harbour, the space offers a breathtaking backdrop from every angle. Every material was chosen with purpose – reflecting our commitment to cultural respect, environmental sustainability, and community engagement – resulting in a vibrant, welcoming environment that supports wellbeing, sparks creativity, and strengthens connections among our people and visitors. 🔗 read more about this project through the link in our bio

New Zealand is entering a new era of opportunity. One where the infrastructure we build today can shape a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. At the heart of this transformation are our airports. Often seen as places of transit, they are fast becoming strategic anchors – spaces that connect people, place, culture and economy. As international travel rebounds, domestic tourism thrives and regional connectivity becomes more important than ever. More than just moving people, they have the potential to become symbols of national identity, leaders in climate action, drivers of innovation and catalysts for local growth. Simon Brown explores how airports are transforming from transit points into powerful platforms for climate leadership, cultural connection, and regional development helping to shape a bold new future for New Zealand. 🔗 Visit the link in our bio to read more! 📸 Project pictured: Dubai Airport Vertiport
