A look into our archive! We recently found a collection of papers relating to the history of the Print Workshop and we thought it would be nice to share.
The Print Workshop at Gainsborough’s House was first opened in 1979 in the old coach house in Gainsborough’s garden. Since then, many incredible printmakers have made work in our studio and continue to do so.

Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop member, Véronique Mermaz, works with drawing, lithography and artist books. She has recently completed the series “Crayon”, which consists of 15 lithographs exploring the possibilities of simple crayon drawing on a limestone.
Véronique says: “I am very fortunate to have access to a lithography press close to home. It allows me to organise and carry on with my work over the long term. One step at a time.”

It was an inspiring and collaborative day carving and printing linocuts and wood engravings inspired by Spring.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming Theadora Ballantyne-Way for a two-day Polymer Photogravure Masterclass in May.
Participants will learn how to create and prepare their own images for platemaking, from drawing to photography, and see the platemaking process through from exposing to developing their plate in water. Following the platemaking stage, they will learn the fundamentals of intaglio and relief printmaking, adding and wiping and rolling ink, preparing paper and using a professional press to print a small edition.

The process behind the making of a Photopolymer Relief or Gravure plate. Each plate is gently developed in perfect temperature water to selectively wash away material, developing incisions that will become the darker tones of the image. After hardening, the plate will no longer wash away and can be used repeatedly, the recesses holding your ink of choice to create deep rich colour and continuous gradients of tone.
@theadora_ballantyne_way will be teaching the process in a Masterclass @gainsboroughshouse in their @gh_printworkshop on the 16th and 17th May.

Interested in Drypoint printmaking? Join Molly Martin for a two-day masterclass to learn the full process.
Molly’s practice is rooted in drawing and painting as well as printmaking. The work is often figurative and plays with narratives that speak of overall themes rather than a specific story. Here, semi-swaddled, squashed figures encounter strange and symbolic surroundings in chaotic and ambiguous landscapes. Through the making of the work, Molly endeavours to better process complicated human relationships, sensations and interactions, in an attempt to observe and make sense of things, through a wider lens of humour and playfulness.
Often working in print, Molly uses drypoint and etching to delve into the murky and tentative language of intaglio – using gentle ink wiping to manipulate her image on the plate, she plays with dark and light tones and sweeping marks which reveal her semi-intelligible worlds full of wonder, darkness and delights within the drawn line.

Celebrating creativity in action 🎨✨
We loved seeing Hahnemühle Concept Watercolour Joy in the recent “Pulling Prints” workshop with Gainsborough’s House, Mill Tye Gallery & Arts Centre, and local schools.
In just over an hour, students explored mono-printing and watercolour, creating vibrant, expressive work in an inspiring. Guided by Flo Cameron, they embraced new techniques with confidence and creativity.

Reflecting on the fantastic opening at Mill Tye Gallery last Saturday, celebrating the work of eight incredibly special artists and creators.
Over the past six months, we’ve been working together in the Print Workshop at Gainsborough’s House, where I developed a programme bringing in visiting artists to introduce new printmaking techniques and expand the group’s already inspiring practices.
The eight participants, aged 18–25 and currently out of education, came together through a course I designed around the kind of support and creative community I wish I’d had after completing education. What grew from that idea became a weekly space for experimentation, collaboration, and connection, and along the way, I feel I’ve met some lifelong friends.
The exhibition showcases a diverse range of work, including textiles, photography, sculpture, and, of course, printmaking.
Pulling Prints continues at Mill Tye Gallery and Arts Centre until Easter Monday, 6 April 2026.
