When
@gguullffeerr started in 2011, they played scrappy, complex math rock influenced by the emo revival. But in 2024, the band emerged almost unrecognizable, while still retaining the spirit of what made them all fall in love with playing together in the first place.
Written in majority part by guitarist/vocalist Joseph Therriault, morsels of founding members Vincent Ford and David Mitchell’s sound remained throughout. Signature wistful vocals and oblique-yet-nimble guitars are still a fixture, as are thematic elements that touch on burnout, climate crisis, and losing touch with a difficult reality. But 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘥’s stylistic turns are emphasized by deeper texture and simpler songwriting, influenced by the reemergence of 90s alternative and shoegaze. With a new emphasis on atmosphere and more straightforward songwriting, Gulfer gave themselves space to explore audaciously.
At the time,
@swimintosound wrote, "their best sounding record to date, where that trademarked Gulfer clarity meets a host of new ideas and sounds.” ... “Front to back, the fourth Gulfer album is an absolute barrage, smacking you in the face from the jump and not letting up until the album comes to its perfectly timed close.”
