Here’s a detailed breakdown of one of our recent rig setups:
Shout out to
@JamesSchwartzLight for that awesome pink cart in the back! This setup was for a top-down credit card shot using a Sony FX3. The camera was mounted on a mini L-bracket cheese plate, allowing us to access the buttons on the back without dismantling the rig.
When building rigs like this, it’s crucial to consider accessibility to the camera’s battery port, buttons, and memory card slot. The mini L-bracket cheese plate was connected to a smaller cheese plate above, providing mounting points for short baby pins. I chose short baby pins to avoid unnecessary excess at the top.
We used some
@modernstudioequipment , including 5/8” crosses (the gold ones) and aluminum 5/8” rods on the sides to keep the rig lightweight. For the lower part of the setup, we opted for a 3/8” rod, also aluminum, as it was less visible for VFX to remove in post-production.
Beneath the card, we utilized a teeny weeny grip head from
@FilmTools , which fit perfectly behind the card and remained out of sight for VFX work. The green hardware indicates quality, and we used a
@gforcegripsdotcom 9 Dot Solutions 5/8” Gag on the other side. These adapters are fantastic for transitioning from 5/8” to 3/8” and are a staple in my toolkit.
This rig was designed for maximum efficiency and minimal post-production cleanup, ensuring a smooth shooting process. Thanks to all the specialized equipment, we achieved a flawless top-down shot with easy access to all camera functions.
