Clube da Esquina, Milton Nascimento’s double album arranged by Eumir Deodato and Wagner Tiso and released in 1972, had little in common with the musical productions then emerging from the studios of Rio and São Paulo. Behind the famous cover showing two kids sitting on the side of a dirt road, a whole collective of musicians from Minas Gerais gathered, brought together by the ethereal-voiced singer-songwriter, and the Borges brothers. The goal was something universal. It wasn’t exactly a band; more a cultural group made up of friends who meet at the club on the corner (to translate the album’s title) where anything might happen...

Promoting unbridled pleasure, reggaeton has been synonymous with empowerment for many young women. Echoes of feminist activism can be found in tracks from Bad Gyal, Zowi, and Ms Nina. More and more quality music is emerging in Spain, with a somewhat sharper and less commercial feel than the reggaeton made in the Caribbean. The pioneers of Iberian perreo are undoubtedly the Mafia del Amor. This trashy boy band, made up of four MCs, gave Spanish reggaeton its pedigree with legendary tracks such as “La Disco Resplandece” and “Tropical”
But let’s not forget Rosalía’s meteoric rise! In a few short years she has managed to merge pop, flamenco, and reggaeton on tracks that have become international hits.
