MICE presents: The Scarful Archives – Rome Edition
“MICE Presents” is a series of exhibitions dedicated to t-shirt archives entirely authored by a single designer, illustrator, artist, or collector, exploring the visual culture and stories behind them.
The first edition focuses on Scarful, aka Alessandro Maida, whose work across illustration, graphic design, tattooing, and music has been part of the Roman and Italian underground for over thirty years.
After the first Scarful Archives exhibition in Milan, MICE brings the project to Rome.
All 150 original T-shirts designed by Scarful will be exhibited alongside sketches, original artworks, and archival material connected to their production and history.
During the event, a live screen-printing session in collaboration with @straighttohellmerchandclothing will feature four graphics taken from Scarful’s original sketchbook.
More info coming soon. In the meantime…

1994 “Gang Autonoma” Ternana Ultras tee - Gang Autonoma was born as a satellite group of the Freak Brothers, the core ultras group of Ternana formed in 1980.
The group’s name and imagery were inspired by the legendary underground comic The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, created by Gilbert Shelton in the late 1960s. The comic follows three free-spirited, anti-establishment characters navigating a chaotic world shaped by politics, counterculture, and everyday absurdities.
In line with the comic’s characters, the Freak Brothers and the entire Curva Est embraced a strongly left-wing, anti-fascist, and anti-establishment ideology, and created some of the most sought-after merch in the history of Italian Ultras.
1989 Curva Sud Milan ringer tee, featuring the logos of the two main Ultras groups at the time: Fossa dei Leoni (FdL) and Brigate Rossonere (BRn), plus a 1990 Brigate Rossonere European Tour tee, with all the dates of that season’s Champions League matches.
The BRn were the group that introduced marketing into the curva: before their foundation, all the merchandise available was produced by the club, and every item only bore the name of the team.
They were the first to realize there was a lot of untapped potential in this area, and began producing items such as scarves, stickers, and shirts featuring the group’s name and their symbol. Most of the money raised through the sale of merchandise was used to pay for stadium tickets for fans who couldn’t afford them, and to make away trips less expensive.
Today, merchandise is one of the pillars of the Ultras' operations and influence all over Italy and Europe.
Edit: the firs t-shirt is actually from the 1989 Champions League final in Barcelona - this extract, taken from the book “Noi Curva Sud Milano”, tells its origin in detail:
“So, we head to the final in Barcelona on May 24, 1989. It was the largest and most massive exodus in the history of football: one hundred thousand spectators, almost all Milan fans, since the opponent, Steaua Bucharest, was subject to a regime that did not allow free movement or travel abroad for its citizens.
A special train was organized for the Fossa group and another for the Brigate, each with a thousand seats, but thanks to AC Milan director Paolo Taveggia, we obtained eight thousand tickets from the club, allowing many of our members to organize the trip on their own.
For the choreography, we came up with a simple but very effective idea: all the fans traveling to Barcelona had to wear a red T-shirt. We produced one jointly between FOSSA and BRIGATE and gave it directly to those who purchased match tickets through the two groups”
Early 00’s anti-imperialist tee, printed during the Iraq War, aka the “Second Gulf War”, started under false pretenses in 2003 by the Bush administration, and sadly topical these days too.
Soviet Souvenirs
The Kremlin + CCCP Perestrojka tee, both bought in Moscow in 1989.
