Happy to share a new (for me) beer tomorrow in Long Beach. This is a Pre-Prohibition Lager, a porch crusher for this March heatwave.
And in honor of this beer styles roots it's name comes from one of my favorite Simpsons episodes.
This beer is called:
"...I'll find you Beer Baron."
"No you won't!"

When I say you're adorable...
I mean it.
Because beauty doesn't just mean a flawless face or perfect curves. It is the way you look at each other. How he drops his guard and kisses your hand when I'm not paying attention. How you whisper to each other and giggle while I move things around. How pleased you are to be with each other.
That's adorable. I'll take that every time.

Earlier this year I got to speak on my journey home brewing and joining the @socalcerveceros with @norwalkbrewhouse for @goodbeerhunting . It was a reflective and fun conversation during a brewday at home with @west11thbrewing . This club has provided us with many learning opportunities and connected us. And because of this club I have been able to make new friends and improve my skills along the way. I am very grateful for all the friendship and beers we’ve shared along the way. ✊🏾🏜️🍻
A year ago I did this my first ever snow hike in the SFV. It was dangerous to go alone and after a year of being away it was nice to get back and just in time to celebrate a friends birthday. No snow this time but I am guessing it is going to come down during these next couple of big rainstorms.
I recently was able to travel and in trying to figure out how to take my homebrew to my family made a little discovery. Bubble wrap from packages make great protective wrap for bottles of homebrew! You have to check your bag but it's worth it. Also, it's a good idea to store your wrapped up beers into a bag as an extra later of protection in case things go bad haha. Plus you get to Upcycle!
I didn't like my layovers in Phoenix but O.H.S.O beers and some reading helped me ride it out. Its nice having local craft beer options at the airport.
Pale beers do great with fruit forward coffee's. And light roasted african coffee's are excellent candidates for this job. I've been working on a approach to share to try and get more home brewers to try this out. Here's what I recommend.
1) FIND A SICK ASS COLD BREW RECIPE start with a solid cold brew recipe. I recommend brew ratio's of about 10 grams of water per 1 gram of coffee. To me, this makes a strong cold brew that stands out in beer but isn't bitter.
2) KNOW YOUR YIELD OF COLD BREW
You need to know what the YIELD of your sick ass cold brew recipe is to plan your experiment. The volume of cold brew you make determines how much you can add to your beer. This will affect the percent by volume of coffee in the final beer.
Whatever volume of cold brew you add to your keg will replace beer.
For example: if you decide to add 0.25 gallons of cold brew, you'll be adding 4.75 gallons of beer to completely fill your 5 gallon corny keg. This beer would be:
0.25 gallons coffee/5 gallons of blended beer -> 5% coffee by volume
So once you know the total yield of cold brew your sick ass recipe makes, divide that up to get your BLEND RATIO'S.
3) BLEND RATIO'S
Easier than it sounds. See the example above with 5% coffee. If that's the maximum blend you can get with the sick ass cold brew recipe you got then that is your high setting. You can only get blends less than or equal 5%
Depending on how strong your cold brew is and what your beer taste like a blend somewhere between 1-5 is probably solid.
4) USE A SYRINGE TO MEASURE COFFEE
Create a flight of 4 beers. Each beer will have a different percent BY VOLUME of your cold brew concentrate. This is easier if you use metric units mostly because syringes like the one I used are commonly available and already in metric units
For example, 2 oz ~ 60 mL. So a blend that is 5% by volume will have 60*5% = 3.18 mL coffee, and the rest is beer.
5) TAKE NOTES
it helps, for future reference and helps you keep track of your ideas.
6) SEND CARLOS A BEER
😉
