Screenbound has boarded international sales on the multi award-winning Irish feature film Solitary from writer and director Eamonn Murphy.

The film will have its Nordic Premiere later this month at the @gbgfilmfestival as one of eight nominees for the esteemed Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award.
Solitary finds Brendan, played with nuance and a quiet intensity by Gerry Herbert, a widowed farmer living a quiet and secluded life on the edge of a village in rural Ireland. Following a break in at his home, a growing sense of fear and isolation takes hold and his everyday life and struggles cause him inner turmoil as he silently attempts to preserve his independence in a society which he no longer feels is his.

We’re very happy to share a little excerpt from the opening sequence of Solitary. This sequence was very much written to be a microcosm of what the rest of the film would explore; the fear and isolation that comes with living in rural Ireland. The choice to let action unfold within the frame and to hold shots rather than over-edit was to give the audience time to truly observe Brendan in his world. By resisting constant cutting, the film creates an experience that draws viewers into the character’s inner world and asks them to stay present.

This year’s eight nominations encompass an impressive range of artistic expressions, perspectives and themes, in stories from different parts of the world. The Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award was established in 2007 by Ingmar Bergman himself together with the Gothenburg Film Festival when he was the festival’s honorary chairman. The award celebrates artistic courage and innovation in filmmaking, and is awarded to a debut film that captures the spirit of Ingmar Bergman’s groundbreaking and existential exploration
The award is presented by the Gothenburg Film Festival in collaboration with the Bergmancenter on the Faroe Islands, the Ingmar Bergman Foundation and the Bergmangärdarna Foundation.
