Our first Felt City Tours monthly tour of the 2026 season is here!
Join us on May 17th for a special photowalk under the theme “Resilience & Creativity.” Together, we will explore the ger areas through stories, images, and everyday moments that reflect the creativity and resilience of the community.
The experience will also include a guest speaker session with our community member Ts. Bilgee, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years. Through his experiences as a father, metal welder, and entrepreneur, we will reflect on resilience, creativity, and everyday life in the ger areas.
Grab your phone or camera and join our community-based experiences and discover Ulaanbaatar through the voices and lives of the people who shape it!

Gerude comes from “Ger Edu-Ude,” meaning education for ger areas a name created by GerHub’s former designer, @odmlto .
Piloted in 2018 in partnership with SOHO Impact and later scaled up, Gerude reflects our approach to learning: grounded in experimentation, shaped by real contexts, and built on trust and flexibility. SOHO Impact’s support went beyond funding it allowed GerHub to test ideas, learn from failure, and continuously improve the program over time.
At a time when “learning through play” was still a new concept in Mongolia, Gerude introduced hands-on, creative learning experiences. We worked with children using LEGO, cardboard, and simple materials not just to build things, but to build confidence, collaboration, and curiosity.
In one of the workshops, a student quietly shared an idea:
“What if we could change something in our school together?”
That question became the spirit of Gerude.
Through the program, over 1,300 students took part learning 21st-century skills not from textbooks, but by working together, creating, and taking action in their own communities.
Some designed ideas with their classmates.
Some spoke up for the first time.
Some began to see their community differently.
And for some, the journey didn’t end there. Gerude alumni like Tsatsral, two Anu (who later joined as gappers), and Erdene who went on to design the ger plant pot @grew.in.project continue to grow with us.
Now, the question is where does Gerude go next?
As part of GerHub’s 10-year journey, we’re looking back at where it all began. One of our early collaborations was with @ruralurbanframework and together, we first explored how to bring infrastructure into ger areas in new, innovative ways.
We designed and built a prototype to integrate water, heating, and sanitation into a single structure. It worked - but not the way we imagined.
So we went back, rethinking and redesigning - making it simpler, lighter, and more practical.
This project wasn’t perfect. But it marked the beginning.
If you have ideas, thoughts, or even criticisms drop them in the comments.
We’re still learning. And we’re still building.
From sketch✍️ to exhibition.
Settling the Nomads, an exhibition at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, explored the blend of Mongolia’s nomadic traditions and urbanization. In collaboration with Rural Urban Framework (RUF) at The University of Hong Kong, the exhibit presented architectural prototypes that honored nomadic heritage while addressing urban growth challenges.
Initial ideas explored how the Mongolian ger could be used in a contemporary urban context.
Today marks ten years of GerHub! While the last decade seems to have flown by, it is incredible to see how much our City has changed. The ways we discuss and engage with our ger area communities have expanded our collective imagination.
We have piloted big and experimental ideas, embraced 'failing forward,' and our youth continue to challenge our assumptions. Throughout all this time, one thing remains constant: the people who love, support, and challenge us. Thank you to our partners, volunteers, and donors who have made this journey possible. Happy 10th anniversary to our entire community. Let's continue creating meaningful impact for another ten years.☺️

Walking helps us understand the daily lives of ger residents. While cultural activities help us understand the importance and meaning behind Mongolian traditions.
For the Ger Area Heritage and Premium Heritage Tours, we include activities as an option to slow down and spend time with practices that were passed down from our ancestors. These experiences allow learning through doing, observing, and conversation, rather than only hearing about what Mongolian traditional practices are.
These activities are a crucial part of our community-based tourism approach. They create direct, fair opportunities for community members to share their skills, time, and knowledge with others.
Felt City Tours offers a small number of thoughtfully designed tours in Ulaanbaatar’s ger areas. Each experience focuses on learning the city through everyday life.
1. Ger Area Walking Tour
A walk through the ger areas to understand how the city is lived day to day.
2. Ger Area Walking Tour + Ger Visit
A walking tour followed by a visit to one of our key community members - a step into the lives of residents living in the ger areas.
3. Ger Area Heritage Tour
A focused tour centered on one cultural or heritage practice such as learning how to write in Mongolian Calligraphy, or cooking a delicious fried dumpling called buuz.
4. Premium Heritage Tour
A longer tour that includes two heritage activities of your choice for deeper engagements.
