Our being is so embedded in our surroundings, always reflecting back like mirrors. De Aar's landscape is like a dry, forgotten wasteland. A sad donkey walks by, lost and thirsty. I drank a lot of brandy and coke while I was in De Aar and I came home in a dark place.

These images belong to a larger series entitled ‘Dog Show’. Set in Brackenfell, Cape Town, the heart of the northern suburbs in the modest location of a community hall. Using a vintage analogue 6x7 camera, studio lights and pedestal, I invited these people to have their portrait taken with their “thoroughbred” pets.
I experiment with this notion of the ‘grand portrait, the grandeur that it creates, and how this affects the exchange between those having their portrait taken and myself.
Well trained and groomed, the owners reveal their personalities in relation to their passion. The viewer is invited to consider the internal narratives in juxtaposition to the larger social context of the dog show. Here are people with all their personal baggage, delighting in a small moment of freedom to express themselves.
These intimate insights presented on a large scale are both planned and full of surprise. The subject matter is as serious as the construct of the competition they subscribe themselves to. A paradox exists where people are framed in a specific moment of candour, but in bearing witness, the audience is tasked to consider their own judgment.

De Aar Interiors. (ii)
De Aar is a strange place; a dead end, where most dreams go to die. Crippled by lack of opportunity, fear and Vaderland liefde, this little town in the Northern province of South Africa was once the pearl of the upper Karoo because of its strategic location as a major railway junction.
There is something incredibly satisfying about exploring other people's homes, their prized possessions - glorifying the ordinary and everyday mundane.

Blood sweat and beers. First post of the year, JURRE. I think this image speaks for itself. It’s been an interesting year in terms of introspection and calculating the time to jump off the cliff of algorithms and Bitcoin. Over the next few days I’ll be sharing some NEW OLD work shot in a little backwards town in South Africa called De Aar, directly translated to The Artery.
