Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide Deposits, or VMS deposits, are a type of metal-rich ore deposit that forms in submarine environments due to volcanic and hydrothermal activity. They are mainly composed of copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver minerals, as well as iron and sulfur. They are often associated with basaltic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks, and can be found in clusters or belts along volcanic arcs or mid-ocean ridges. They are formed by the precipitation of sulfide minerals from hot, metal-rich fluids that vent from the seafloor, known as black smokers. VMS deposits are important sources of base and precious metals, and have been mined since ancient times.
